Environmental quality and sustainability

This section of the syllabus deals with issues relating to our use of the environment and our effect on the functioning of physical systems.
We will examine how the earth-atmosphere system operates as preparation for a study of the causes and consequences of global climate change.

The effect of resource use and exploitation will then lead us on to consider the issues surrounding soil degradation followed by access to and use of water.

As a case study we will investigate the biodiversity present in tropical rainforests as well as the reasons why biodiversity is declining. This will then lead us on to consider the environmental consequences of change in this biome.

Finally we will evaluate to what extent development can be balanced with environmental sustainability.
