Greenwashing can be compared to the term Brainwashing or Whitewashing. It is the unjustified appropriation of environmental virtue by a company, an industry, a government, a politician or even a non-government organization to create a pro-environmental image, sell a product or a policy, or to try and influence their standing with the public and decision makers. They are whitewashing or sugar coating their practices to entice you the consumer that their products are environmentally sound so that you will buy their products, when in reality, they are contributing to the destruction of our air, landscape, economy, and our community.
In this website, designed by Portland State University students in our Capstone project class, you will see read and learn some interesting things about the subject of Greenwashing, that was in fact a new word to many of us until this class began.
Through the minds and ideas of many creative and cooperative classmates, we have come up with various examples and explanations of Greenwashing to educate you as well as ourselves and to hopefully make you the consumer aware of the practice of deceptiveness in business. You will come to your own conclusions but hopefully this website will make you aware of something that you may never have known about before.
