Homestay  Concept

Homestay is a form of Accomodation ( tourism and/or study abroad program) that allows the visitor to rent a room from a local family ( Host)  to better learn the local lifestyle , culture as well as improve their language ability ( in study abroad concept. Many Countries promoting Homestays as a means of developing their tourism industry.  By hosting a homestay participant also allows the local family to earn some additional, needed income. The Homestay concept started centuries ago.  Today, living with a host family in another country is universally accepted as one of the best ways to meet new people and understand the cultural diversity that makes up our present world..The Host families open up their homes to people who wish to immerse themselves in another culture, share in the everyday life of a family and feel part of it. They provide food, accommodations and friendship as well as an introduction to their community, country, culture, language, and local customs, etc. There are many agencies in the world maintain networks of local coordinators who select, screen, and monitor host families and provide assistance and information to insure a good match between family and guest.

Why Homestay

When traverlling , sometimes the most affordable and rewarding experiences can be found, when you stay with a family living in your host Country. Homestays can give you a richer experience what  “ real  life

Homestay programs are a great way to meet locals on your trip, people who aren’t trying to sell you something or be your paid guide. It can be an enriching experience for both parties and can save the traveler a significant sum of money, especially in countries where lodging is expensive. It gives you a chance to see how the locals live and to get an insider’s perspective on the area. The people you stay with often know the best local bargains, the most worthwhile things to see and do, and the easiest way to get from point A to point B. In places with limited public transportation, your hosts will often pick you up from the train station, bus station, or airport.

Homestay programs

Homestay programs are built upon the idea of give and take. When you’re a traveler, you stay with others; when you’re stationary, you volunteer to be a host. If you live in Manhattan or San Francisco you’ll probably get lots of requests. If you live in an area that’s not a tourist attraction, you’ll get very few. There are ground rules about how long people can stay and information on sleeping arrangements. Some people may have a guesthouse; others may have an air mattress on the living room floor. These details are generally available up front.

Benefits of Staying at a Homestay in Kerala- India

Homestay is similar in concept to that of a bed and breakfast- B&B. Guests are either accommodated in the family home, or in separate bunglows nearby. Nowadays, most homestays trying to provide their guests with just as much comfort as a reputable hotel.

Benefits of Homestays in India

There are a Many  reasons why staying at a homestay can be preferable to staying in a hotel or resort. The benefits of homestays in India include:

  1. Distinctive and Characterful Accommodations -- Tired of sterile hotels / Resort? There's no better way to experience the incredibly diversity and charm of India than at a homestay. Endless options and include plantation bungalows, historichavelis (mansions), and remote rural cottages, farm houses etc.

  2. Personalized Service -- In contrast to a hotel/ Resort, a homestay usually can have only has a few rooms. The family who resides there runs it, and acts as host. This gives  guarantee that guests receive plenty of individual attention. Guest  can spend as little or as much time with the host family as you like. Some choose only to dine with them, while others spend hours chatting to them. Regardless, staying with an Indian family is the easiest way of understanding Indian culture and way of life. Many guests and hosts find that they bond with each other so much, that they keep in touch long after the vacation perios  is over.

  3. Local Knowledge -- Wealth of information that the hosts have about their local area makes deciding what to see and do . Such local knowledge is extremely helpful in getting the most from your visit. Many hosts are delighted to show their guests around their local areas , providing them with invaluable insights that simply aren't available from a guide book or a stay in a Hotel.

  4. Homely Cooked Food -- There's a huge difference between the Indian food served in the hotels, and the food that's cooked in an Kerala Homestay. By staying at a homestay, you'll be able to taste authentic Kerala home cooked food, made to order. It's a lot lighter, and has more variation and flavor than restaurant foods. Some Homestays even welcome their guests into their kitchen, and let them watch and participate in their  cooking process.

  1. The Unique Activities -- As a guest at a Homestay in Kerala, the focus is on you, and your likes and preferences. The hosts are usually offers a great deal of effort into arranging activities that are of interest to you. These activities will vary depending on locations. Exploring Backwaters of Kerala, a coffee plantation in Coorg, watching a polo match in Rajasthan, herding animals in remote  India, village visits, picnics, and temple tours are just some of the options. Guests are often invited to attend weddings, or other festivals that are happening in host living area,  as well.

Staying at a homestay in India is all about immersing yourself in India, rather skimming over it on the tourist trail.

Choosing Your Homestay in Kerala – India

Kerala Homestay accommodations sound excellent , even though – it is very  important to choose your homestay wisely. As with most accommodations in Kerala , the quality is very variable. The most important checking wheather you choosen Homestay in Kerala is approved by Tourism Department, Government of Kerala.

The Kerala Tourism dept have done lots  of effort to improve Homestay Tourism. It has constituted District wise Tourism Promotion Councils ( DTPC). Through DTPCs , tourism dept is giving licences for Homestays based on rules & Regulations. Kerala Govt has strict control over Kerala Homestays. This means that guests are assured of high standards of comfort, cleanliness, and appeal.

In Kerala , the Govt has started to give Licences right from 2005 onwards. The Tourism Dept has done Classification of Homestays based on facilities , location, etc

Classifications of Homestays by Kerala Tourism Dept http://www.keralatourism.org/classificationofhomestays/Classified_Homestay_main.php

If you search for "homestays in India" in Google, you'll be presented with plenty of options. However, it's difficult to know which ones are good. It is better to go through the official Kerala tourism website- keralatourism.org

www.keralatourism.org/homestay/

Mahindra Holidays  having  hotels and resorts in India, has embraced the concept of homestays in India in a big way. There are many other travel companies too. That led to high costs for Homestay Accomodaions all over India. The important thing  of Homestay is  that – it provides quality accommodation in comparatively lower cost .

What's outstanding about Kerala Tourism Dept is that  they've personally visited and inspected all the properties that they give Licence and classifications. This means that guests are assured of high standards of comfort, cleanliness, and appeal. The Kerala Tourism Department  provides detailed information and photos of each property. Tripadwiser  gives guest reviews. The accommodations are also fully bookable and payable online.
