Funda Derin

Muslim Women’s Emerging Identity in Turkey

Dr. Derin will explore how devout Muslim women are becoming more socially liberal in Turkey. Using novels written by Turkish Muslim women writers as sources reflecting their lifestyles and worldviews she will explore  how these women are constructing a Muslim identity according to liberal values, civil rights, the modern welfare state, religious freedom, and religious tolerance.

Funda Derin received her Ph.D. in Political and Social Sciences at Gazi University in Ankara in Turkey. She is currently a lecturer in the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
