Return an E-book Early (Kindle)

FYI - You only need to "return" an e-book if you want to return it early. If you keep it for your entire checkout period, the e-book will return itself.

Kindle e-books from OverDrive have a checkout period just like printed materials in libraries do. The big difference, however, is that you do not have to return the e-books - they just disappear from your e-reader. How do they do this? Using a technology called Digital Rights Management (DRM).

But what if you'd like to return a Kindle e-book early? The e-book must be deleted from your Amazon account. The next time your Kindle connects to wireless, it will be deleted from your device.

  1. Log into your Amazon account at

  2. Choose "Shop by Department," "Kindle," then "Manage Your Kindle"

  3. You should see "Your Kindle Library." Find the title you want to return; click the plus sign (+) to the left of the title to see detailed information. Click the "Actions" drop-down menu to the right.

  4. In the "Actions" menu, choose"Return this book"

  5. When asked "Are you sure you want to return this Library Loan Ebook?" choose "Yes."

  6. The e-book will still be listed in "Your Kindle Library," but if you click on the plus sign (+), the loan status should be expired. In other words, you no longer have access to the e-book
