How to burn a Linux Mint DVD (needs to be done in a special way)

Back to the home page

To use the downloaded iso, you have to burn it on a DVD in a special way. Namely as a raw image, not directly as .iso file.

In Microsoft Windows

In Windows (all versions) you can achieve that as follows:

You can use your favourite burning application for this, but it's probably a lot easier with the free Windows application ImgBurn.

You can download this fine freeware application here (*click*). Note: take care not to install an extra load of useless rubbish during installation.... You only need the "bare" ImgBurn itself.

After the installation of ImgBurn, you can use it like this (*click*).

Note: burn the DVD at low speed, preferably at 4 x. That way you greatly reduce the risk of burning errors.

In Linux Mint

The best DVD burning application for Linux Mint is currently Xfburn, because the better known burning app Brasero is rather unreliable and regularly spoils your DVD's. Xfburn on the other hand, is reliable, simple and easy.

Install it like this:

Launch a terminal window.
(You can launch a terminal window like this: *Click*)

Use copy/paste to transport this magical incantation to the terminal:
sudo apt-get install xfburn

Press Enter. When prompted, type your password. Your password will remain entirely invisible, not even dots will show, this is normal.
Press Enter again.

Now you can launch Xfburn like this:

Menu button - Sound & Video - Xfburn

Press the button "Burn Image" in order to, well, burn the iso image.

Error check

Before using the DVD, let it check itself for errors. Boot your computer from the DVD and hit the space bar when this boot screen appears:

Then choose "Integrity check" in the boot menu of the DVD. It's unwise to skip this!

Finished burning? This how-to helps you with installing.
