Septic

Sewage Enforcement
East Hopewell Township is a rural Township with no connection to public sewerage pipes. This means that individual home owners are responsible for installing and maintaining on-lot septic systems. A septic system is a small scale sewage treatment system in which an anaerobic bacterial environment develops to decompose the waste discharged into the tank.

Here are some tips to keep your septic tank running smoothly.

  1. Avoid dumping cooking oils and grease down the drain. This can fill up the upper portion of the septic tank and can cause the inlet drains to block. Oils and grease are often difficult to degrade and can cause odor problems and difficulties with the periodic emptying.
  2. Do not flush non-biodegradable hygiene products such as sanitary napkins, cotton balls etc. These items will rapidly fill or clog a septic tank.
  3. Limit the use of food disposal systems as they can contribute to rapid overload of the system and early failure.
  4. Do not dispose of chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, materials with high concentrations of bleach or caustic soda (lye) or any other inorganic materials such as paints and solvents in your septic system.
  5. Roots from trees and shrubbery growing above the tank or the drain field may clog and or rupture them. If you are planting new trees, consider planting them far from your septic system.

As you can probably imagine, there are many things to take into consideration when installing a septic system. The township's guidelines for on-site septic are designed to ensure that all septic systems function safely and efficiently. The township's Sewage Enforcement Officer is Stephen McKeon. All questions concerning on-site sewage and water systems should be directed to him.
