Our aim is to investigate the origins, use, dating and social context of some of the earliest pottery in different regions around the world. We are a multidisciplinary group of archaeologists and scientists, based at Bradford and York universities, working within a network of international collaboration. We are interested in pottery innovation and understanding how the first pots were used.

Our approach ranges from simply thinking why pottery may have been an important to early agricultural and pre-agricultural societies, to considering the form, manufacture and function of early pottery and to more detailed microscopic, chemical and molecular analysis of organic residues to provide direct evidence of use.
