Middx Indoor Track & Field Champs - Lee Valley - Sat 18 & Sun 19 Mar 2017

posted 21 Mar 2017, 03:38 by Fiona Kennedy   [ updated 21 Mar 2017, 15:03 ]

On a wet and windy weekend, several ESM track athletes travelled to Lee Valley to compete in the Middlesex County Indoor Championships, writes Phil York. Those that warmed up on the outdoor track in the blustery conditions were glad to move back indoors to test themselves on the banked 200m track.

Nicola Ravenhill won the U20 1500m in 4:53.10, a championship best performance and only just shy of her personal best (indoors and out). The previous day Nicola had represented Middlesex in the English Schools' Cross Country Championships in Norwich, finishing 66th over the 4km course.

Laura Stewart, coached by Pat Cornell, was the club's other gold medallist, winning the U20 400m in a personal best of 62.12 (see photo). In the U17 age category, Cameron Thomas qualifies to run the unusual distance of 300m, which involves an interesting lane break situation for the athletes. Cameron was unlucky to miss out on a medal, finishing fourth in 48.53 seconds.

Distance runners can be excused for feeling dizzy when competing indoors, as the races comprise twice as many laps as outdoors - go do the math! Lucy O'Brien was delighted to finish second in the U17 800m, but was a little disappointed with her time of 2:32.56 - this was partly due to an official forgetting to ring the bell with one lap to go.

Phil York finished fifth in Saturday's senior men’s 800m, setting a season’s best and relieved that the race was run as a straight final. He returned the following day to snatch a bronze medal in the 1500m.

In the sprints, Desmond Ofasi was unlucky not to make the final of the U20 60 metre dash, recording 7.38 in his heat. 400m specialist William Lord set a PB of 7.17 in the heats of the senior men’s 60m, but also failed to make the final.

The Middlesex championships were held jointly with Herts and Kent, and provided a useful opportunity for the athletes to test themselves ahead of the outdoor season.

North West London League – Wormwood Scrubs - Sat 04 March 2017

posted 13 Mar 2017, 09:45 by Fiona Kennedy   [ updated 18 Mar 2017, 13:50 ]

There were some good results at the final fixture of the North West London cross country league at Wormwood Scrubs. Jessica Leane (pictured) and John Fielding took individual wins in the U17 races. George Kerry took third but had a good battle with John in the course of the race. There were top-three placings in the U15 races too, for Anisa Ibrahim and Sudeys Hersi. U13 Mohamed Ibrahim showed pleasing progress in his race, displaying good technique.

In terms of the team performances, the U17 men won. The U15 boys were well represented and finished third; Sudeys was backed up by Arun, Chauncey, Kirk, Matteo and Kai.

Maryam Hussain and Roisin Lynch helped the U17 women to second place behind Jessica, while the U15 girls’ team was nudged out of third place by just one point, despite fielding just Anisa and Fiona Coutts.

A round of applause to all the young athletes who have turned out for the club this cross country season, and a big thank you to all coaches, team managers, officials and other volunteers who have given their time and expertise so generously. Check the website and Facebook page for details of the upcoming Awards evening... and please return cups and trophies as soon as possible, so they can be engraved in time!

BMAF Indoor Champs - Lee Valley - Sat 11 & Sun 12 Mar 2017

posted 13 Mar 2017, 09:19 by Fiona Kennedy   [ updated 18 Mar 2017, 13:51 ]

ESM secured four medals at the British Masters Indoor Athletics Championships at Lee Valley last weekend, writes Phil York. Fed up with the cold and wet weather, a group of us travelled over to Lee Valley Athletics Stadium for the British Masters National Indoors Championships. Sprinter Jason Carty breezed to victory in the M45 60m dash, recording 7.27 in the final after winning his heat in a swift 7.37. How many more medals can he fit in his bulging trophy cabinet?

Tracey Gould picked up a silver medal in the W40 hammer throw. Margins are tight in this game, and Tracey's 30.72m best effort was only a metre behind the winner.

Patricia Thomas (pictured) finished second in the W50 800m, taking home her first ever national medal. Carol Jones was delighted with her silver medal in the W55 1500m, recording an indoor PB of 6:05.88.

And didn't we have a long debate over shall I/shan't I wear spikes! Angelo John felt that his speed has suffered as a result of a long cross country season, but was satisfied with his 2:15.59 clocking in the M40 800m - we think this may be an inaugural Masters age group record for St Vincent & The Grenadines. Your correspondent, having given away the ladies’ ages, is left hanging on for his next birthday (and a new age group) after recording a season’s best in the M50 800m.
