ORIGIN OF NAME 

The name Elam is English and is derived from Elham, a village near Canterbury, Kent County, England.  Elham was probably a contraction of Elmham meaning a village of elms and residents of that community first bore the name Elham which afterwards became Elam.  The early Elams were wealthy aristocrats and had been granted a coat of arms.

VARIATIONS OF NAME

Some of the variations of the Elam surname were the results of the English language being used flexibly and informally in its earlier years. It was not uncommon for variations of a surname to be spelled different ways in the same document.  Another cause was the relying on others to write their names in documents because of the common inability to read & write in pre-1800s.  For example, Robert Elam (1684-1753), who owned a 1200 acre plantation, signed his will with an X.  Another example of variants occurred in the 1850s when three of John Wesley Elam's sons chose different surnames of Ealem, Eleam & Elam.  Historically, other Elam variants were Elham, Ealem, Eleam, Hallam, Helam, Elem, Elum, Ellem and Ellam.

Notes for John P. Ealem:

John was a soldier in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy. Civil War records show him as enlisting in the 29th Regiment, Alabama Infantry, holding the rank of Private, and being taken prisoner in GA in 1863.

John seems to have disappeared sometime before 1900; he is not listed in any censuses. Mary Ellen is the only parent listed in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. A clue to his whereabouts might be found in one of his occupations, a peddler. In the days of the horse and buggy, a peddler's job could keep him away for long periods of time. Or, perhaps he actually abandoned his family.  In 1913 at age 65, he died in Northeast OH and was buried in the Cyrus Cemetery, WV.  His death certificate listed his occupation as a peddler. Also, his daughter’s (Elizabeth) birth record listed his occupation as a peddler.  Interestingly, John's younger brother, Elbert, was also a peddler.

All his records including his death certificate have the Ealem surname.  Also, all his children’s surnames were Ealem.

Notes for Mary Ellen Staley:

Mary Ellen grew up living next door to Henry Smith Cyrus (1860 & 1870 census). Interestingly, Mary Ellen's daughter, Grace Estelle Ealem, married Henry Smith's son, Ulysses Cyrus.

Family members report that Mary Ellen was half-French and she lived to be 106 years old. However, since she did not show up in any records after 1920, it is likely she died in the 1920s in her 70s.

Notes for Grace Estelle Ealem:

Shortly after marrying Ulysses and having their first child in WV, the family moved to AR to find work for Ulysses. After about 5 years of working in AR and having 2 more children, they moved back to WV.

Grace and Ulysses were divorced in about 1906 because of Ulysses's alcohol abuse and his unfaithfulness. It was reported that Grace became bitter and depressed about the way Ulysses caused the breakup of the family.

After divorcing Ulysses, Grace became a businesswoman. She had a Millinery Shop (she was a hat maker) in OH and ran her boarding houses in OH and MI.

Later in life, Grace became addicted to Codeine (a narcotic drug used in cough remedies and derived from opium or morphine). Because doctors limited the quantity, she got her boarders and her son, Basil, to get more Codeine to feed her habit. Her daughter, Viva, forced her to go through withdrawal and detoxification in Viva's home for a month.

Notes for Ulysses Cyrus:

After partying one night, Ulysses was observed in the morning coming out of the local whorehouse by his nine-year-old daughter, Viva, on her way to school. The whorehouse was a couple doors down from his family's home. Finally, after Grace and the kids experienced much hurt and embarrassment, Grace divorced him in 1906.

Sometime in the late1930s, Ulysses visited his daughter, Viva, in MI.  Ulysses, as a grandfather, tried to show her how to discipline her kids, unfortunately in a harsh and abusive way. Viva ran him off.

    Jennie's family was living in AR because her father had moved from WV to find work. Jennie died shortly after her sister, Viva, was born. At seven years      old, Jennie had become ill and because her mother was so overwhelmed with caring for an infant (Viva - b. 1895), she neglected Jennie's illness, which       may have contributed to her death. The family moved back to WV a few years later; they probably never visited her grave site again.

Notes for Viva Bertha Cyrus:

Viva's family of origin was from WV; however, they were living in AR when she was born because her father had moved the family so he could find work. A few years after her birth, the family moved back to WV where she was raised.

At 5 years old, Viva's family had running water for the first time.

Viva recollected living next door to the White Creek Post Office and general store in WV at age 7. She often observed Old Hatfield (of the Hatfield & McCoy feud) shopping at the general store. She also remembered her grandfather, Henry Smith Cyrus, doing pickup and deliveries in his express buggy wagon.

Viva recalled her parents separating for 3 months when she was 10 years old. Afterwards, they reconciled their differences and moved back together. A year later, they finally were divorced because of his unfaithfulness. The family moved to Portsmouth, OH to get a fresh start.  Consequently, Viva had an estranged relationship with her father, and strong feelings of resentment and animosity towards him.

Shortly after marrying Edgar, they moved to Detroit, MI to find a good job for him in the auto industry. In the 1940s, Viva and Edgar purchased an 80-acre farm that they resided on for the rest of their lives. The farmhouse had electricity; it was a first for Viva. Although there were some attempts at farming, it was never a serious endeavor. The farm was located at 6010 Fish Lake Rd., Holly, MI.

Viva insisted on planting vegetables, flowers, and bushes in the day following a full moon. She swore by the Farmer's Almanac.

All Viva's children were born at home except Gerald. Because she was bedridden most of her difficult pregnancy with him, she did not want to risk an at-home delivery.

Notes for Edgar Bowman:

Edgar was born and raised in KY. At 18, Edgar was working as a blacksmith helper in OH. At age 24, he joined the U.S. Army Cavalry in which he served during WWI. Shortly after his discharge from the military, he married Viva and they moved to Detroit, MI where Edgar got a job at Ford Motor Company as a machine operator. Later in his career, he was a metal mixer and assisted engineering in fabricating metal at the Ford plant in Milford, MI. He retired from Ford Motor Company in his 60s.

In the 1940s, Edgar and Viva purchased an 80-acre farm in which they resided on for the rest of their lives. The farmhouse had electricity; it was a first for the family. Although there were some attempts at farming, it was never a serious endeavor. The farm was located at 6010 Fish Lake Rd., Holly, MI.

In his 50s, Edgar had a bout with cancer resulting in the removal of one eye. The grandchildren would get a kick out of seeing his glass eye on the bathroom sink where he would leave it overnight. His cancer laid in remission till the end of his life.
