The EAEA John Potanko Memorial Scholarship is awarded by the East Allegheny Education Association, a group that is comprised of all teachers, school counselors, and school nurses in our district.  Nearly 30 years ago, the EAEA established a scholarship to benefit students who choose to continue their education by pursuing a college degree.  In 1996, our scholarship was renamed the EAEA John Potanko Memorial Scholarship.  A member of our Association, Mr. Potanko was a dedicated teacher and school counselor.  Sadly, he died one day after beginning his 32nd year of service to the children and families of East Allegheny.

Over the years, our members have generously donated over $55,000 to fund this scholarship.  We are proud and honored to have played an integral part in the successful school journeys of our students as they continue their learning.

The criteria for receiving this scholarship are based on a student’s academic performance, extra-curricular activities, and level of community service. Seniors applying for this scholarship must submit a written application and three letters of recommendation.  Finalists are chosen based on a points system assigned for each portion of the written application.  Those finalists must then interview with the Scholarship Committee.

Our members have already started to donate funds again to the EAEA John Potanko Memorial Scholarship which will be awarded at the Academic Awards Night in May 2015.  Current high school seniors wishing to apply for this scholarship opportunity can do so during the written application period in February 2015.  Forms and guidelines will be available at the High School Guidance office.
