We found this animated gif and...


you know... we replicated and improved in Excel.

Basically each dot moves around in a regular circle, but they are in different phase (measured as deviation). This phase difference makes that the dots are regularly close and far to each other so you see "waves" if you look at the total picture. 

Our Excel model is an XY Scatter chart with a tiny bit of VBA used for the animation.
Because of the calculation speed limitations of Excel we use a static picure in the chart backgroud for the circles. To position the circles and dots correctly, the background picture was first made as a chart.
In our model you can change the number of dots and the deviation too. If you set the "type demo" to dynamic it will make possible to analyse how the wave-pattern changes when deviation grows. It is really interesting, download the file and you will see it!
