Durham Big Sweep

On the first Saturday in October, volunteers from all 100 counties in North Carolina and approximately 90 countries worldwide come together to clean up our land and waterways in a worldwide event. In NC and here in Durham County, these volunteers will be participating in NC Big Sweep.

Durham Big Sweep will be on Saturday, October 4, 2014. However, volunteers interested in participating in Durham County can pick their own clean-up  date anytime throughout the months of September and October and still be part of Big Sweep.

Durham County has been participating in NC Big Sweep for more than a decade now. In just the last three years over 1369 volunteers have helped to clean an estimated 44,518 lbs of trash out of our community.

But the work is not complete, more and more trash is being carelessly discarded in our community everyday. Volunteers dedicated to helping Durham's environment are needed each year.

Volunteer registration for the 2014 Big Sweep event is easy. Just click here for the Registration form and you will be contacted by the County Coordinator to arrange details.

North Carolina Big Sweep was founded as Beach Sweep in 1987 and officially became Big Sweep in 1989. Since its founding, NC Big Sweep has had more than 300,000 volunteers and collected over 10.3 million pounds of trash from North Carolina watersheds. Last year saw NC Big Sweep celebrating its 25th Anniversary of working to make NC a cleaner place. To learn more about this organization or this year’s upcoming event, visit www.ncbigsweep.org

Become a Volunteer

Volunteering is simple. Volunteer as a clean-up team with a group of your family/friends/co-workers, or  volunteer as an individual and be assigned a team. Teams can pick their own clean-up locations; local parks, neighborhoods, stream banks, lake shore, parking lots, school grounds, workplace grounds, etc... or we can help your group find a location. Anywhere you see trash will make a great Big Sweep clean-up site.
