________________________________________________________________

Overview

The objective of this four-day workshop is to give professional and graduate students in the Nicholas School of the Environment the foundation in business principles so that they can lead or participate knowledgably in the formation of entrepreneurial ventures that lead to a more sustainable future. The workshop will follow the phases of a startup, and will introduce business disciplines in that setting. A variety of formats will be used, including case based analysis, guest talks and panel discussions, and exercises based on students’ environmental entrepreneurship business ideas.

The workshop will examine the basic phases of a startup:

·        Conception: evaluating an opportunity

·        Planning: creating a strategy and operating plan

·        Company formation: legal structure, equity, organization and management

·        Financing: sources of capital, financing plan, the “pitch,” dilution, exit

·        Early growth: revenue, sales plan, managing marketing, R&D and operations

Background in various disciplines will be woven into a discussion of the entrepreneurial process. These topics include marketing and market research, finance, managerial and cost accounting, strategy, management and organizations, and operations.
