About us

The Dublin Brain Bank is a collaboration between the Neuropathology Department of Beaumont Hospital and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. It is based in the RCSI's Smurfit Building and is under the Directorship of Dr.'s Michael Farrell and Francesca Brett - Consultant Neuropathologists involved in the running of the Brain Bank. The Project Coordinator, Teresa Loftus, organises the day to day running of the Brain Bank and is the initial port of call for information regarding Brain Donation.

By encouraging brain donation, the Dublin Brain Bank offers individuals an opportunity to support medical science in a very tangible manner.  Donation of precious brain tissue facilitates research studies that will provide valuable information on the diagnosis and treatment of many common neurological diseases such as Alzheimer, Parkinson and Motor Neuron Disease which ultimately will lead to increased quality of life for patients.

The following graphs paint a positive picture for the future of Brain Donation and ultimately neuroscience research in Ireland. There has been a steady increase in Brain Donation year on year as the public becomes more aware of the Brain Bank facility. These figures are correct as of November 2012.
