Compost Chemistry

What are the
Green
and
Brown?

"Green" Molecules: Amino Acids are the building blocks of proteins. Degraded sulfur (Yellow atom) from amino acids becomes rotten egg smell (H2S)

"Brown" Molecules:
Carbohydrates (starch cellulose) & Alcohols contain C, H & O only
 N2

O2

CO2

            H2O

What are the
GASES?

N2 is 80% of the air we breathe.

O2, 20% of air, is what we inhale to live, courtesy of green plants!

CO2 is what we exhale & is the product of all burning.

Plants trap sunlight to combine H2O & CO2 gas into carbohydrate,  releasing O2 and H2O!

Bacteria in the soil (on farms in the roots of legumes) "fix" N2 gas to form amino acids (protein) and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) among other bio-CHEMICALS.
