Rafael Calvo. Licenciado (1963) y Doctor en Física (1969) del Instituto Balseiro, de Bariloche, Argentina. Investigador Superior Emérito del Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Tecnicas (CONICET, donde trabaja desde 1964), actualmente en el Instituto de Física del Litoral en Santa Fe, Argentina. Profesor Titular Honorario de Física en la Facultad de Bioquímica y Ciencias Biológicas de la Universidad Nacional del Litoral. En los últimos ~60 años Rafael trabajó en áreas de física de la materia condensada, magnetismo molecular, físico-química de materiales y biofísica, publicando más de 160 trabajos en revistas internacionales. En 1993 recibió el Premio Enrique Gaviola en Física Experimental de la Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales y en 2007 el Premio Bernardo Houssay del Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología (MinCyT), en Argentina. El Dr. Calvo es miembro de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias, Córdoba, Argentina, de la Academia de Ciencias de Latinoamérica y de la Academia de Ciencias Médicas de Santa Fe. Colabora con físicos, químicos y bioquímicos del país y del extranjero en áreas de magnetismo molecular, investigando propiedades de metales de transición y elementos de tierras raras en varios grupos de materiales. Investiga interacciones magnéticas  en moléculas biológicas, metaloproteínas y sistemas modelos, estudiando la síntesis, cristalización, estructura molecular, estructura electrónica e interacciones magnéticas de compuestos metálicos de aminoácidos, péptidos y macromoléculas. Prepara nuevos materiales y estudia sus propiedades usando técnicas espectroscópicas y termodinámicas características de los campos de la física de la materia condensada y el magnetismo, como la resonancia paramagnética electrónica (EPR), ENDOR, medidas magnéticas, calor específico, rayos X, etc., investigando transiciones de fase termodinámicas y cuánticas en esos materiales. Durante mas de 40 años colaboró con el profesor Feher de la Universidad de California, San Diego (USA), investigando estructura y función de centros fotosintéticos usando resonancia magnética y modelado molecular. 

Fue profesor e investigador invitado en Universidades de Estados Unidos, España, Francia, Brasil, Chile y Venezuela, donde ha colaborado en proyectos de investigación que produjeron resultados científicos. Algunas de esas esas colaboraciones continúan.

 Desde 1969 varias generaciones de estudiantes de física, química y biofísica fueron orientados por el Dr. Calvo en sus tesis de grado, posgrado and doctorado. Dirigió en esas áreas 14 tesis de doctorado, dos de maestría y una cantidad mayor de tesinas de grado. Numerosos investigadores realizaron estadías postdoctoral bajo su dirección.
