With over 20 years in medicine, and 8 as a Harvard Medical School faculty member in plastic surgery, Dr. Borud offers both innovation and experience in the medical products and services space.  He provides specialty consulting services to biotechnology and medical device companies, surgical products companies, as well as to private equity and venture capital concerns.  He specializes in marketing to patients and physicians, strategic planning, designs and innovations, and medical micro-economics.

Dr. Loren J. Borud was born and raised in Minot, North Dakota and graduated from Minot High School.  He double majored in Physics and in Human Biology at Stanford University, where he received his B.S. degree with Phi Beta Kappa honors.  After graduating from Harvard Medical School, he entered a 5-year residency in general surgery at UCLA, where he worked at UCLA Medical Center, the West Los Angeles VA Hospital, Olive View Medical Center, and the Martin Luther King Drew Medical Center.  While at UCLA, he also performed 2 additional years of research in the Division of Plastic Surgery.

He went on to train for 3 more clinical years in plastic surgery and in hand / microsurgery at New York University’s Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, where he worked at Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, and also at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.  He obtained his board certification from the American Board of Surgery, and was admitted into the American Society for Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the New England Society of Plastic Surgeons. 

Dr. Borud served as a full-time faculty member at Harvard Medical School in Boston for 8 years, rising to the rank of Assistant Professor of Surgery, where he developed an international reputation in body contouring surgery after weight loss.  He has authored over 30 scientific publications, 8 book chapters, and has given lectures at national plastic surgery society meetings, as well as at international forums in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and South America.  He is the editor-in-chief of the Atlas of Body Contouring after Massive Weight Loss, published by CineMed in 2009. 

Dr. Borud is taking time out of practice for writing, consulting, and to complete an executive MBA program at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management in Evanston, Illinois.  He has advised major U.S. companies on the innovation and design of surgical technology, as well as on information and marketing strategy.  In his spare time, Dr. Borud has completed two Boston Marathons.  He is now in the process of publishing a single-author book for the public on the economics of plastic surgery.
