An Outline of Scientific Work

 

  A chronological outline of the scientific research, achievements and the ensuing honors are as follows:

 

1. Bifurcated Glow Discharge cw-CO2 Laser and Other CO2 Laser Related Research (1977-88): A novel concept of the cw-CO2 laser consisting of bifurcated discharge columns in parallel was evolved, which has been adopted in commercial systems. Fundamental aspects pertinent to optical modes, nature of discharges and physical characteristics of the pulsed and cw-CO2 lasers were studied. 

 

2. Indian Cosmic Ray Experiment “Anuradha” Aboard NASA Space Shuttle Mission (1983-85): Intricate nature of interaction of the CO2 laser radiation with a polymeric nuclear track detector of Allyl Diglycol Carbonate, popularly known as CR-39 was investigated which led to the development of a methodology to process this brittle polymer. In collaboration with the Cosmic Ray and Solar Physics group of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, this methodology was applied to engineer the cosmic particle detector stack of the module “Anuradha”. This was one of the only two Asian experiments selected by NASA of USA and flown aboard their space shuttle mission ‘Spacelab – 3’ in 1984. 

 

3. Laser Induced Enhancement in Nuclear Track Revelation Sensitivity of Allyl Diglycol Carbonate (1985-86):  Surface treatment of the polymeric nuclear track detector Allyl Diglycol Carbonate (CR-39) with a cw-CO2 laser beam under optimized conditions was found to enhance the nuclear track revelation sensitivity significantly. A thorough study of this phenomenon was carried out which resulted in acclaimed publications of this exciting discovery.

 

4. Laser-Polymer Interactions (1980-87): Experimental and theoretical research was carried out on laser induced surface softening of hard and brittle polymer CR-39, the kinetics of laser induced combustion and ablation processes in a highly combustible polymer Cellulose Nitrate and laser processing of numerous other polymers in different fluence regimes. 

 

5. Laser-Tissue Interactions for Biomedical Research (1988-98): Interaction of IR and UV laser radiation with cataractous lens tissues and fallopian tube tissues in different time and energy domains were investigated to evolve modalities for Phacoablation and Laser Female Sterilization. This work was done in collaboration with All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Sree Chitra Medical Centre, Thiruvanathapuram. A theory of laser induced corneal ablation was evolved to gain deeper insight into the fundamental processes involved in this modality.  

 

6. Mechanism of Short Pulse Laser Induced Polymer Ablation (1991-94): As a Humboldt Fellow at University of Heidelberg in Germany, experiments were devised to elucidate the fundamental nature of short pulse laser induced polymer ablation. A rapid pyro-decomposition model was evolved as a consequence of these studies. We have published this model in journals of high repute and were invited at the 1992 Gordon Conference in New England (USA) to participate in a debate on this subject.     

 

7. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) Films of CdS Nanoparticles (1993-2002): In-house developed LB set-up was used to grow CdS nanoparticle films. We studied the size dependent optical properties of these films to understand the quantum confinement effects. We have also developed a new hybrid LB – Chemical Bath deposition technique to grow thick ordered and oriented films of CdS nanoparticles using LB layer as a template and discovered that even with the growth of the film thickness with time, the nanoparticles maintain a constant mean size. 

 

8. Fullerene Doped Porous Glass (1996-97): Glass with pores of a few nanometer diameter were doped with in-house produced C60 molecules using a solution phase diffusion method and their optical properties were investigated in linear and nonlinear regimes. Optical effects of strong interaction between C60 molecules and the pore surface and reverse saturable absorption were observed in these glasses. 

 

9. Material Physics of Thin Films and Quantum Structures (1996 – onwards): Currently Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) of thin films and quantum structures of host of materials and research on their innate and engineered properties is our main mandate. The range of materials being studied includes wide band-gap compound semiconductors, spintronic materials, Colossal Magnetoresistance Materials like doped Manganites, high k – dielectric materials and quantum dots of semiconductors and metals. These research areas are being pursued in-house and in collaboration with a number of groups within CAT and from other institutes like IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore, DAE-UGC CSR, Indore and a couple of Universities etc. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to grow the TiO2 nanostructures for MOS devices using PLD, which is perhaps an important step forward for the future VLSI technology and the multilayer of ZnO quantum dots in a solid matrix for the innovative semiconductor device developments. A novel method for the Band – gap engineering for ZnO quantum wells based on the variation of oxygen ambient pressure and alloying with binary oxides of MgO and CdO and a buffer assisted growth methodology were evolved. The later development has been applied to grow ZnO Multiple Quantum Wells on Sapphire substrates, which to the best of our knowledge have produced room temperature Photoluminescence in line with the expected size dependent quantum confinement effects for the first time.

 

10. Cluster Research using Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (1999 – onwards): Fundamental studies on the formation and nature of vapor phase clusters in short pulse laser induced ablation plumes are expected to provide vital information on genesis of the initial growth of condensed state of the matter. We have studied the clusters formed in the pulsed UV- laser driven ablation plumes of ZnSe and ZnO using Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry in collaboration with University of Muenster, Germany. Besides a vast range of complex clusters of these materials we have observed and studied, to the best of our knowledge for the first time, ‘magic’ peaks of ZnSe clusters consisting of 6, 13, 19, 23 and 33 molecules in the laser ablation plumes.  

 

11. Gold Nanoparticles (2004): Award of Humboldt fellowship was received for the third time to carry out collaborative research at the University of Ulm in Germany during early part of this year. Fundamental research was carried out to elucidate the mechanism of initial growth of gold nanostructures on sapphire surface using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) and Laser induced size shortening of gold nanoparticles. In the former experiments role of the surface damage inflicted by the PLD plume was established and a new form of gold structure which undergoes chemisorption based wetting – dewetting transitions on the sapphire surface was observed. Further understanding of this phenomenon is underway. Laser induced shortening of gold nanoparticles on Si surface has been accomplished and more experiments are being carried out to perceive the mechanism of this process. These experiments are expected to provide basic insight into the very initial growth of nanostructures using PLD and the complex nature of interaction of a nanosecond laser radiation with nanoparticles.

 

12. New Materials for Field Electron Emission (2005 - onwards): In the recent past, there has been growing interest in the area of field electron emission. This interest stems from the fact that along with scientific importance in enhancing the basic understanding, it is also technologically important, in realizing various devices such as flat panel displays, electron sources in vacuum microelectronics etc. On one hand attempts are being made to explore new materials / compounds with better field emission properties while on the other hand influence of surface morphology, in terms of shape, structure viz. nano structures, nano-rods, pyramidal pattern etc., on field electron emission is being investigated. A variety of materials such as Gd2O3: Eu3+, In2O3, Si doped diamond like carbon films, GaN on Molybdenum tips, carbon nano-tubes (CNT) etc. have been studied for some time. We are currently carriying out research on wide band gap semiconductors such as ZnO nano-wires, AlN nano-rods, nanostructured GaN thin films etc. for their field emission characteristics.

 

13. PhD Advisor and Examiner: Currently I am PhD advisor for Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai and Devi Ahilya University, Indore and has served as a PhD examiner for a host of Indian Universities.

 

14. Teaching Experience (1981 - till this date): I have taught advanced courses on‘Laser Physics’ at BARC Training School for 5 years during 1981 - 86 and currently teach advanced courses on 'Laser Physics' and ‘Nanostructured Semiconductors' at RRCAT Training school and at University of Ulm, Germany.
