Hydrocele in 3rd trimester fetus:

sonographic image of hydrocele in fetus

This ultrasound image of a 38 week old fetus reveals a bilateral, large hydrocele of the scrotum. A small cllection of fluid in the tunica vaginalis is insignificant in the 3rd trimester male fetus. Larger collections should be followed up in the post-natal period. The testes are seen floating in the hydrocele fluid. Such large collections might indicate communication between the processus vaginalis and the peritoneal cavity. Image courtesy of Dr. Gandhi, India.
