Accelerated Track

I just wanted to upload a quick note following up on our discussion at back-to-school night about the accelerated track that is available this year for students in 8th grade algebra. Specifically, I wanted to answer some of the questions that arose during back-to-school night.

  • If students wish to take the “accelerated track” this year they can self-select by choosing to do the more advanced problems on the homework, tests, and quizzes.
  • There is no need to officially apply through the math department at this time.
  • Near the end of the year (around Spring Break) if they have completed the work assigned for the accelerated track, the Math Department as a whole will decide whether the student has demonstrated (1) the mastery of the subject through A’s and B’s on all graded accelerated work, and (2) the maturity, work ethic and desire to advance.
  • If students don’t wish to be on the accelerated track at this time, they may achieve the same goal of getting to Calculus in their senior year by either (a) doubling up and taking Geometry and Algebra II in their Sophomore year or (b) taking a course elsewhere and providing the math department with a transcript.

I hope this answers any of your questions about the accelerated track, but please let me know if you would like clarification.
