12th Grade English is dedicated to reading, writing, critical thinking, and verbal communication.  Studying texts from a variety of sources time periods will shed light on a range of writing styles.  Writing progress will be facilitated through direct instruction in grammar, effective writing, and the writing process.  Fluency and comprehension will be the focus points of reading instruction.  Students should expect rigor, challenge, tests, quizzes, daily reading assignments, and extensive writing assignments.  This is a challenging class created with an eye on Jefferson County and Colorado standards and requirements.

The course web site at www.drivenlearningandteaching.com will be used as a primary communication tool for content, calendar, and other important information.  Students and parents should be sure to view the "overview of the philosophy" vodcast at the home page on this site.

  • Book of choice, present on a daily basis

  • Class reading material and checklist present on a daily basis

Unit 1: Writing for Application with focus on college essay/cover letter and resume/professional digital presence/portfolio combined with MLA bootcamp
Unit 2: Introduction to Critical Theories through Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness
Unit 3: Literature Study of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World
Unit 4: Contemporary Essay: Critical Lens as seen in examination of texts of choice and Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist
Ongoing: Rise Up and Read through daily study of Book of Choice, Multiple Intelligences connections, and course interludes plus vocabulary work, reading skills, and grammar instruction
Semester 2 Units of Study
Unit 5: Studying the Texts of Researchers through examples of primary and secondary sources and building a significant research paper
Unit 6: Qualitative Research through selection of research question and methodology followed by completion of a significant research paper
Unit 7: Literature Study/Literary Non-Fiction Study, including examination of Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers
Unit 8: Reflective Presentation through student selection of media, such as website, video, newspaper, formal paper, business plan, grant writing, marketing plan, or other
Ongoing: Rise Up and Read through daily study of Book of Choice, Multiple Intelligences connections, and course interludes plus vocabulary work, reading skills, and grammar instruction

(minus 2% for an unexcused absence; excessive tardies also deduct at 5 tardies=1%)

Grades are based on overall percentage as follows:

A   100-90                         D         69-60

B   89-80                           F          59-0

C   79-70 

STANDARDS-BASED SCORES for Writing Standards, Reading Standards, and Multiple Intelligences and Technology Standards are entered individually into gradebook. If score on current assignment is higher than score in gradebook, score on current assignment becomes current score. If score on current assignment is lower than score in gradebook, score on current assignment is averaged with score in gradebook to get new score in gradebook.
