How Counselling and Psychotherapy Differ

Definitions of counselling and psychotherapy abound. One way to differentiate the two is by viewing counselling as a way of approaching one's life from a current-landscape model: issues around personal growth, life adjustment, autonomy and/or symptoms currently presenting themselves are addressed. Psychotherapy, on the other hand, implies a vertical perspective where current circumstances are viewed as part of a larger lifetime dynamic that may include repeating patterns and require analysis of unconscious forces at work.
