Mathematical Philosophy
Mathematics or mathematical aspects of any other subject is different from subject matter which involves no use of mathematics. In learning mathematics from the text-books I have always engaged in dialogue with them. In preparation for some mathematical test, example PhD qualifying exams, I organize questions around the chapters we are supposed to know "very well", these includes definitions, lemmas, theorems, and examples one may be asked to reproduce on an exam, or maybe asked to reproduce in an extended context. For this reason I go over the organized questions several times making sure I am able to answer them as they are, or apply them in the solution of "extended problems"
The use of "flash cards" in preparation for exams is a common technique used by many people, including current day students. It can only be considered "rote memorization" if your instructor asks you to reproduce the same thing on an exam. However, if the instructor asks you a question that extends the concept in a new way, and you are able to produce a correct answer, it cannot be considered "rote memorization". Effective tests combine both of these elements, and I have encountered them as a student.
