Protein Biopharmaceutical Lab
Protein Biopharmaceutical Lab
The laboratory is involved in the development of Protein Biopharmaceuticals and is situated in the Department of Biotechnology at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), S.A.S. Nagar, Punjab, India.
The laboratory is led by Prof. Abhay H. Pande, Department of Biotechnology, NIPER, S. A. S. Nagar. Prof. Pande has >27 years of experience in the field of protein research. After obtaining his M.Sc. degree in Biochemistry (1995 from Nagpur University, Nagpur), he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Life Sciences (2000 from Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore), where he worked on the characterization of liver galactin-1, a β-galactoside-binding protein implicated in modulation cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. He then joined Dr. Girish Sahni’s group at CSIT-IMTECH, Chandigarh (2000-2003) where he was involved in the development of clot-specific streptokinase (a novel Indian clotbuster protein drug; under Phase-II clinical trials). Later, he joined Dr. Suren Tatulian’s group at University of Central Florida, USA (2003-2005) where he was involved in the characterization of protein toxins (cholera and pertussis) and inflammatory enzymes (PLA2 and 5-lipoxygenase). Subsequently, he worked as a Lecturer at the Department of Biological Sciences, BITS-Pilani (2005-2006). Later, Prof. Pande moved to NIPER, SAS Nagar (Mohali) (from 2006) where he established his research group which is involved in the development of protein biopharmaceuticals (see lab research section).
