"Chores for Rod"

Explorers Present Check for “Chores for Rod”

The Explorers presented a check for $1,600 to Rod Byrd on Thursday, December 19 to help him with his health issue. During October and November, they raised money by offering their services to do chores for people in the community.

Rod Byrd is fighting cancer for a second time. He was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx in 2001. He received radiation treatment at that time to fight the cancer. He was cancer free for over 10 years before being diagnosed again earlier this year.

On October 3, Rod underwent a procedure to remove his larynx entirely. A couple weeks later, he received a device to help him speak. He is undergoing therapy and training on how to use that device. Obviously, there are significant medical costs associated with Rod's procedures. The Explorers hope to raise some money to help offset some of those costs.

“These young men participated in about a dozen projects helping area residents do things like rake and bag leaves, clean windows, clean a garage and other chores. Those people, in turn offered a contribution toward this cause and the Explorers kicked in some money from their own funds,” stated Explorers advisor Doug Knust.

“This is a great project for the boys because they helped two groups of people. Those who ‘hired’ them for chores were able to get some chores done that may not have otherwise been done. Obviously, the money went to help Rod who has medical costs.”
“The community was been extremely supportive as they always are of this group and the Explorers had fun with the projects.

Unfortunately, the weather prevented the guys from getting to all the chores requests, ” stated Knust.
