Potential Acquisition of new Property for DCPA

posted Jul 27, 2017, 11:10 AM by Mish Lenhart

After many years of occasional use for community events made possible by the public spiritedness of the Hatches, their property at the corner of Brown and Short roads in the hamlet of West Danby is now for sale. Given its strategic location, its use historically as public recreational space when rented for the purpose by the Town prior to the current ownership, and the greatly expanded potential uses were it available once again for public use, DCPA is looking for support for the acquisition of the Hatch property at the corner of Brown and Short roads in the hamlet of West Danby for use as a public recreational space owned and administered by the Danby Community Park Association, a registered non-profit. Summer 2017 News!

posted Jul 27, 2017, 7:57 AM by Mish Lenhart

The 2017 Annual Meeting, held on July 20 under the park pavilion, was a success! We have seven people serving on the DCPA Board now, and there are plenty of projects in motion to make the park a recreational hub in Danby!

The disc golf course is being improved and will soon have a full 18 holes, thanks to the DiscIthaca crew.

The natural playground Phase 1 construction will begin as soon as the ground in dry enough to drive a large tractor over (help us out, Mother Nature!). Phase one will include a slide and climbing boulders.

Plans for an ice rink, natural bridges over soggy trails, and natural amphitheater built into the mound are underway, and will hopefully be implemented within the next year.

There are lots of groups using the park for various fun and social activities, and it is wonderful to see folks embracing Dotson Park as Danby's community backyard!

The DCPA will also be holding a sign designing contest, so that we can get a cool and welcoming new sign in the entryway. More information will be shared in an upcoming Danby Area News article.

Email dotsonpark@gmail.com if you would like to be involved in any of the projects listed above!

2015 Annual Meeting & Picnic a Success!

posted Jul 20, 2015, 8:31 AM by Mish Lenhart

The Danby Community Park Association's Annual meeting and picnic was a hit! On July 16, the weather was perfect for gathering by the pavilion in Dotson Park and celebrating a great year of entertaining events and financial stability for DCPA. Approximately 20 friends of the park enjoyed good food and great information about park happenings, future plans, and volunteer opportunities. See attached document to view the full DCPA annual report.

The highlight of the meeting was when DCPA president Kenny Makosch recognized three special volunteers for their hard work to keep the park going strong. Steve Barber has been a park volunteer for many years, and most recently he agreed to let the park use his tractor for mowing, and helped drill the holes where the disc golf baskets were permanently installed. Peter Farley has dedicated so much time to keeping the park and disc golf course in shape - mowing such a large space is no easy job, but such an important one that we all appreciate! Thanks to Julie Clougherty, the park is more financially stable and we are grateful for the time she has spent caring for the trails and front entrance area (Tom Janda accepted on her behalf). Cutter Cramton and Pat Govang were also recognized for their commitment to building the disc golf course expansion. Gould Colman generously sponsored the awards for these volunteers. We hope they all get to relax and enjoy their new growlers - cheers!

After the meeting, folks hung out around the fire, toasted marshmallows, enjoyed some Ithaca brews, and listened to a terrific acoustic performance by Tom D'Ambrose. It was a great event that truly reflected the relaxed and friendly community in Danby.

2015 Annual meeting & Picnic on July 16

posted Jun 21, 2015, 3:22 PM by Mish Lenhart

Hello friends of Dotson Park,

You are invited to the Danby Community Park Association's annual meeting on Thursday, July 16 at 6:00pm in the park pavilion. DCPA will provide grilled hot dogs (including a vegan option), rolls, toppings, chips, and drinks. Feel free to bring a dish to share, if you're so inclined!

During the annual meeting, we will review the 2014-15 happenings in Dotson Park and discuss the priorities for 2015-16. DCPA is recruiting new board members, so this is a good opportunity to learn more. Being on the board is a fun, low-commitment way to give back to the Danby community. No experience necessary! You can also learn about volunteer opportunities or recreational activities in the park, share your ideas, and more.

After the meeting, hang out by the fire, listen to some acoustic guitar music, and chat with your new park friends. Reply to let us know you are thinking about attending. (RSVP requested for planning purposes but not required.)

Please note: Oasis has closed, so our monthly meeting place will have to change. For the June 18 and July 16 meetings, we will gather in Dotson Park - stay tuned for future meeting locations. You can get the latest news if you Like us on Facebook.

See you at the 2015 annual meeting!

Sincerely,

Danby Community Park Association

Pitch to the Town of Danby

posted Sep 1, 2014, 6:35 AM by Mish Lenhart

In July, the DCPA board president spoke to the Danby Town Board, seeking support for the park. The main goal is to receive funding to cover basic liability insurance costs for the park, and regular mowing and plowing services. All of this is so that park patrons can enjoy their visits! If you would like to see the full presentation, please check out the powerpoint below.

Natural Playground plan!

Natural playground design sketchCheck out the beautiful plan for a natural playground, courtesy of Natural Playscapes author and designer, Rusty Keeler. A few generous donors have given funding that could get the playground started, but we need community support to bring the plan to fruition.

If you are interested in helping to make this playground a reality, there are a variety of ways to help! Some are very small commitments, some larger - but we need to hear from you that you want this to happen in order for us to move forward. Please email dotsonpark@gmail.org to let us know you'd like to see the playground happen.

Playtime in the Park!

posted May 17, 2014, 7:20 AM by Mish Lenhart

Imagine climbing up a steep incline, scrambling over boulders and around logs, successfully reaching the summit, where you briefly pause to take in the view, before sliding playfully back down to where you started. And then, of course, doing it all over again – 30 or 40 times.

That is the vision for how children might experience the new natural playground in Dotson Park! Construction will begin this summer, and the Danby Community Park Association wants your help to make it happen. There will be a planning meeting on Thursday, June 19 from 7:00-8:00pm

in the park, under the pavilion. This is in lieu of our regular business meeting for June – the only thing we will be discussing on June 19 is the development of the natural playground.

If you have children who would use this feature, or have an interest in the design of the playground, please attend this meeting on June 19 to help create Dotson Parks’ exciting new play space for the Danby Community. And tell your Danby friends, too!
