Mr Sudhindra Rao is a Consultant General and Upper Gastro-intestinal Surgeon at the Dorset County Hospital since 2006. He is currently the Clinical Director of Surgery. He is an experienced general surgeon, with special interests in Upper gastro-intestinal and laparoscopic surgery. He completed his higher surgical training in the Wessex Deanery in the UK, in addition to surgical training at the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute in India, to achieve excellence in surgical practice based on good knowledge, highly developed technical skills, dedication and advanced communication to deliver a high standard of care.


Mr Rao’s special interests include surgery for gallstones, anti-reflux surgery for acid-reflux, gastroscopy, laparoscopic and open repairs of a wide range of hernias.


Mr Sudhindra Rao is the Surgical Tutor of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is actively involved in training medical students and surgical trainees at all levels. He is dedicated to research and has published many papers in various journals and e-textbooks.


Based in West Dorset, Mr Rao provides the highest level of care to his patients. He believes strongly in the pursuit of clinical excellence through a consultant led service providing close attention to detail. Patient  safety and quality of life are of paramount importance and he strives to achieve these goals. He offers a specialist service that is tailored to the requirements of the individual patient. His practice is based on  good knowledge, advanced surgical skills, dedication and communication to deliver a high standard of care.

He specialises in the treatment of patients with disorders of the oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, spleen, bile duct and gall bladder. He is also a general surgeon and treats patients with hernias and lumps and bumps.
 

A majority of his operations are performed via a keyhole approach (laparoscopic procedures). Some of the complex laparoscopic operations that he performs include those for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), gall stones and hernias. Bariatric surgery (for the treatment of obesity) is becoming more widely performed; he aims to offer this service in due course.

Gall stone disease:

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (removal of the gall bladder)
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration

Acid reflux and oesophageal conditions:

  • Laparoscopic anti-reflux procedures (e.g. Nissen fundoplication)
  • Laparoscopic repair of hiatus hernias
  • Laparoscopic procedure for Achalasia (Heller’s cardiomyotomy)
  • Diagnostic gastroscopy (Camera examination of gullet, stomach and first part of small intestine)
Bariatric Surgery:
  • Gastric banding for obesity
 
Upper gastro-intestinal cancers:
  • Oesophageal, stomach, pancreatic, liver and gall bladder cancers.

Hernias:

  • Laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernias
  • Laparoscopic repair of incisional hernias
  • Open repair of inguinal hernias (under local or general anaesthetic)
  • Repair of para-umbilical, femoral and epigastric hernias
