The Vermont Bryophyte List has been developed over the last five or so years from private and public collections and the literature. The list contains all bryophytes known from Vermont, although not all species known to the author only from herbarium specimens have been verified. Also included are synonyms (indented names), and global and state conservation ranks. For an explanation of ranks, see Natureserve Ranking Criteria.

Nomenclature follows Flora of North America, Vol. 27 (2007, Flora of North America Editorial Committee, Oxford University Press). For species to be published in Volumes 28 and 29, nomenclature follows Anderson, Crum and Buck 1990 for mosses (The Bryologist 93(4):448-499); Stotler and Crandall-Stotler 1977 (The Bryologist 80(3): 405-425) for liverworts; and Stotler and Crandall-Stotler 2005 (The Bryologist 108) for hornworts. A few names for taxa to be published in Volume 28 have already been adopted.

The current list is available to view or download at the bottom of this page. First posted edition: December 27, 2007.

Recent changes are described below; for older changes, click here.

The Vermont Bryophyte Atlas was developed from the same data sources: major herbaria containing Vermont collections (such as NY, VT, DUKE, NYS, FH, NEBC) and from numerous private collections or other data sources. The Atlas was originally created in version 3.2 of ArcView and is slowly being converted into ArcView 10 and released here as a collection of pdf files. In the current version, the town distribution of each Vermont species is displayed on a map showing extant (post-1960) and historic (pre-1960) records. Only the most recent data for the towns are displayed. An attribute table accompanies each map; it contains information on the data source, date of collection, collector, etc. Contents of the attribute tables are available upon request; please email djallard@uvm.edu.
