Hello Small School Parents and Guardians,

We continue to have glorious summer days. I hope you all had the opportunity to enjoy the long weekend with family and friends.

Since I last wrote you, we have secured some wonderful new staff. Miss Johnson will be joining the Small School community as a second grade teacher within the next three weeks. She comes to us from Vickery School in Pittsfield, Maine. She has her Master’s in Education from University of New Hampshire. We are delighted to have her join our team. In addition, we have two new regular education technicians joining Small this year. Ms. Huynh is a Colby graduate who is working on her Master’s in Education at UNE and Ms. Bodwell is a certified elementary educator from the University of Farmington who this past year was a pre-school teacher in Scarborough.

The Small School Transition Team has had two meetings.  You can find minutes of the meetings posted on the Small School website under the Transition Meeting tab. I appreciate the time staff and parents are devoting to this process.

I will continue making neighborhood walks in the upcoming month. As a reminder, neighborhood walks are simple. During the hour(s) posted, I will walk down the assigned streets wearing a large straw hat. Anyone that is home during that time, please feel free to come out and say hello. If it is raining, I will look for another date in September.

Beginning of the Day Routine

Students are to arrive between 8:30 – 8:45 a.m.  Weather permitting, students go directly to the playground to begin their day, unless they need breakfast.  The day begins with a whole school morning meeting at 8:45 a.m. on the playground. At approximately 9:00 a.m. teachers and students travel to their class.  Parents say good-bye to their children at the playground.  This allows learners to easily transition into their day.

Visitor Badges

If you are here as a volunteer or have a pre-set meeting with a teacher, please sign in at the front desk and wear a visitor’s badge.  This allows us to easily identify visitors in the building and it keeps a record of who is in the building in case of an emergency.  (Staff are also being asked to wear their identification badges.)

Volunteering in the Classroom or on Field Trips

There is a new policy on volunteering in South Portland. Anyone volunteering will need to have a background check completed. More information about this will be coming shortly.

End of the Day Routine

If there will be a change in the end of the day routine for a child, please request this change in writing the morning of the change (or earlier). Please make sure all requests for changes occur prior to 2:30 p.m.  The end of the day is busy in the office.

Cars in the Parking Lot and Street

Please be conscious that many of our students walk to school.  During the beginning and end of the day, students are walking in our parking lots. Please drive slowly.

When parking in the parking lots and on the street, please be aware of how difficult it is to manage the one lane that is often created by the placement of where the cars are parked.  Please be aware that our big yellow school busses have to navigate these tiny openings.
