All the IEPs we had were scanned and uploaded. We just have to finish moving them into the class folders. After that we will make a short video and send it out to everyone. Matt, Sarah and I will also be testing out the online section sheets.

Thank you again. I started adding them to the files. I will create a file for each guidance counselor , SETSS teacher and each Speech Teacher. I also have to add the new PT teacher to our dreyfus email account and then I will create a file for him. Please give them access.

Dear Staff,

CHEERS AND JEERS

CHEERS

:) A big “thank you” to Matthew Valia and Francesco Portelos for scanning hundreds of IEPs on to Dreyfus Google docs so that all staff can have easy access to the IEPs of the students they teach. Having the IEPs on our website saves a tremendous amount of paper, ink, and school personnel time and effort. It also helps to have the most accurate and recent IEP changes promptly delivered to the identified staff. The teckies have also put the student’s biographical information on our Google docs. Now you can get the phone number or address of any student by searching our site. More importantly you can edit the information - if a student tells you he/she has a new phone number, address, or an alternate emergency contact. This information is vital so I ask that you put new changes on the Student Contact Google document as soon as you know there has been a change. This way we will have the most up to date contact information in case of an emergency.

Francesco,

I have another project for google docs. I believe that I spoke to you about this on Friday. Can you create a "dashboard" for students selected by the Inquiry Teams so that all teachers on a team can input data on the student? Here is a copy of the dashboard page created by the DOE to track student attendance. I'd like something similar but with different categories and one that staff can input data. See attached. Let me know what we can do please.

Ok, in this case I think we should use a spreadsheet for each student and a form to easily input information.

Hi Linda,
I woke up to do some work and read another article about that poor Rutger's student who killed himself after his roommate set up a webcam in his room and made a public viewing of his gay encounters. They are upping cyber harassment laws across the country. It made me think about our dreyfus49 system. We do have a content filer in place which works pretty well. Problem is that these emails that are blocked sit in an ever growing Message Center (found under
https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/dreyfus49.com/Dashboard). I honestly do not have the time to check these and send them to Joanne. I'd hate for an email to get filtered but not seen and something bad to happen. If we could set some time aside to create a protocol about Viewing emails and then also the action taken.
When we first started the system, we would suspend the user accounts. I no longer think this is the best way, being that more teachers are sending homework and review sheets via email. I propose that all cyber violators get at least one day of after school detention where they write an essay about being a digital citizen. Just an idea.
The violations also range from basic curse words in normal conversation to very foul and angry fight me after school types.

to me

Francesco,

I agree, we must do something about the inappropriate use of the internet. It needs to start with lessons from the tech team about Digital Citizenship. I gave Matthew a book that I bought with several lessons that can be taught. we have a person available one period everyday that can look over the emails but she has to be taught how to do so. I don't agree about detention, I like the protocol of a warning, parent called and suspended account - if they don't get the HW because they have a suspended account, they'll have to get it another way. Perhaps you can train Ms. Watt, a new para, how to suspend account too.

Dear Tech Team,

Thank you for the wonderful, informative, and school enhancing PD workshop you facilitated with our staff on creating web pages. Your workshop was well received as determined by the positive feedback I heard from the staff. I saw new additions to our school web site from various teachers. Excellent!

I just want to remind you that the self-assessment I distributed on Friday is due. I understand that it was difficult to complete the self-assessment on Friday because you were involved in setting up and facilitating the workshops. However, please submit the self-assessment to me by the close of Tuesday. Thank you.

HAPPY FIRST YEAR BIRTHDAY "WWW.DREYFUS49.COM" MAY YOU HAVE MANY MORE!

We have had our website up for one year this Wednesday and I believe that it has been a great success. Many thanks go to Francesco Portelos for all of his work getting us started. But our website would not be the success it is without your embracing our effort to make our building a real school of technology. Better yet last year at this time we used 152 cases of 8 1/2 by 11 white paper that being 10 reams per case and 500 sheets of paper per ream. So far this year we used only 32 cases of 8 1/2 by 11 white paper. Great job staff!

Dear Staff,

Another winner of a weekend in so far as the weather was dry and temperate. On Saturday we had our Scholars and TAP Open House. This was a first attempt at having the Open House so early in the year, and it was successful. The parents and children that came to the Open House were impressed with the rigorous and technology driven curriculum and the energetic and knowlegable staff. Thank you Ms. Martino, Ms. Diacomanolis, Ms. Ruzi, Ms. Blanchard, Ms. Reier, Ms. Hargraves, Mr. Portelos, Mr. Valia, Ms. Fareri, and Ms, Trombetta for supporting the Open House. Thanks to Ms. Jusino as well, for greeting the parents and welcoming them to the event.

Happy Thanksgiving,
I hope you are enjoying your holiday. I had some time to fool around with the Dreyfus49 site and found a way to have the site tell me who our suspended users are. I have been getting more and more calls from teachers asking me to restore their student's accounts because they need to access their work on Docs. Please tell me how to approach this matter.

Meeting with parents

to allstaff

Dear Staff,

It seems that many of you are making appointments to meet with parents. Thank you, parent outreach is a vital step to reducing behavior and academic concerns. However, as we invite more and more parents to the school we create another problem....meeting schedules. Many times parents come to the Main Office and tell the secretaries that they have a meeting with a staff member. The secretaries must conduct a bit of an investigation just to find out who the staff member may be (parents sometime forget teacher's names), where the teacher is, and where the meeting place may be. As a result I asked Mr. Portelos to create a Meeting Schedule Calendar on our website. This way staff can write down any scheduled meeting with parents and Bianca will print it out every morning to share with all the secretaries and the school safety. You were sent an email already from Francesco. Just click the link and then click "Add this calendar". Now when you schedule a meeting with a parent just record your name, the name of the parent, and where you will meet (preferably in room 131) next to the time slot on the calendar. If you want the parent(s) to meet you in your room, you must first meet them in the Main Office or room 131 and then escort them to your room and escort them back out of the building. (Do not use students to escort parents in the building, however, the PC (parent coordinator) may escort the parents to your room.)

Sincerely,

Linda

We placed 1st in Robotic Design and Technical. They said very nice things about the team's knowledge of the robot and how every part worked as well as it being very efficient. It completed 5 missions in one shot.
Now the real hard work begins for March's competition at Javitz.

Hi Ms. Hill,
I hope you enjoyed your weekend. I had some ideas to increase the access to information and I wanted to run them by you.

1. I know Vicky now types up the In House list and places it behind the sign in sheets. I created a new IN HOUSE list on Google Docs. If it is simply type there instead of Word, then it can be accessible by all of us anywhere. I also put a shortcut on the desktop of the In House PC. That way new admits can be added by the teachers there. Do you think this will work better?

2. Unfortunately almost no one took the initative to try the OSS (Online Section Sheet), but what about a simple doc file placed in the online folder for each class. Just for some notes teachers can have that accompany the class like "Joshua was found shooting rubberbands at Louis. Don't sit them together."

3. Similar to number 2 but a shared Late list with all students shared by all teachers on Docs. Anytime a student is late, a teacher makes a note and at their leisure documents it on this list. Sorted by Lateness, we can see who is late the most and work on them first.

Always thinking about our school Francesco, that is what I admire about you. However, at this time we are pushing teachers to compete the SWIS, and also raising the bar for technology infusion in classroom via on line instruction, connected learning initiatives, and assessment management systems. I think we should keep things status quo for now and try your suggestions a bit later.

Just an FYI....

I checked with SI Tech and finally heard back that they no longer have an engineering program since Mr. Spiegel retired. According to Ira Ko, Ninaad and Kevin Nakar, neither Curtis, New Dorp or SI Tech have anything like we offer here at Dreyfus as far as the technology (STEM, Web Design, Video Editing and Graphics) classes go. We should mention that when we start promoting Magnet this year.

Greetings,

I hope you are enjoying your weekend. Just letting you know that after listening to a seminar by Will Richardson about how we block sites, like facebook, at school and parents don't monitor it at home giving students free reign to do wahtever, I created my own student only facebook account. What I mean is that it's separate from my personal account and only have students on it. Our students from Magnet to SpEd are constantly on it after school and I use it to post my educational videos and and promote educational sites. I have however come across even our top students behaving inappropriately and have sent them warnings. I guess I am acting as an web chaperon. I just wanted to disclose this to you and hear any thoughts.

My name on there is MrPortelos Portelos. I have posted several contests on their and keep very good communication with our alumni as well. did you know there are over 489 members in the Dreyfus 49 group someone created including graduates from the 70's?
