Inro Series

Inro were used in ancient Japan to carry chops, medicines and other articles.  Traditional inro were boxes that were strung onto the Kimono sash--Kimono had no pockets.   The inro displayed here are made from solid polymer clay.  Some boxes have been strung as decorative elements that can be strung on a belt or worn on the neck, while others have been left undrilled and can be used as table decorations.

Tiger Inro
2-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 1"
$200

This intricate polymer clay piece is formed with a flat back and curved front and a slide top.  A Polaroid emulsion lift transfer of an ancient Chinese tiger woodcut print has been adhered to the front and sealed with a polyurethane finish.  The gold clay beneath the transfer gives a pearlized, golden huye to the entire piece.  The inro is strung with braided cording and finished with a polymer clay bead and tassel.  The polymer clay clasp and sizer bead are both twirled lentil beads in black and gold.

 Geisha Inro #1
2-1/2" x 1-1/2"
$200
Another hanging piece with braided cording, this inro encorporates two images--a Japanese Ukiyo-e woodcut print as well as an ancient poem in Japanese calligraphy.  The butterfly sizer bead is antiqued, and the black and gold swirled lentil clasp finishes the piece.  This is a round cylinder box with a slide top.  Solid polymer clay construction.

Geisha Inro #2
2-3/8" x 2-1/8" x 1-1/8"
$175

This inro has been completely fabricated using polymer clay, with a Polaroid photo emulsion image on the front and side.  The inro is finished using a polyurethane coating, but is somewhat delicate and is meant to be a decorative item.

Floral Inro
2-3/8" x 2" x 1-1/8"
$175
Another in a series of inro, this box is completely fabricated from polymer clay with a Polaroid photo emulsion image.  The edges are finished using extruded PVC and the entire box is covered with a polyurethane finish.

At Sea
2-3/8" x 2" x 1-1/8"
$175
An exquisite Ukiyo-e image of a fisherman at sea highlights this golden Inro.  The original image was blue and white.  The gold background deepens the blue image to almost black, and the gold clay adds a shimmer to the entire piece.

About the Pieces

I use a variety of techniques to create my decorative items, including the incorporation of art rubber stamps (from JudiKins, Savvy Stamps, Invoke Arts, Lost Coast Designs and Clearsnap) and the use of Japanese and other art images.  The Japanese images are ancient Japanese woodcut prints, Ukiyo-e, that are delicate, amazingly intricate and beautiful.  I have collected these images over the last few years, and they are my favorite subjects for my artwork.  All the pieces have one thing in common--the use of my favorite medium, polymer clay.
