Bio

Dong-Wan Choi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Inha University.

Prior to joining Inha University, he spent a Fall semester as an Assistant Professor in the School of Software at Kookmin University. He also worked as a research associate with Dr. Thomas Heinis  in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London in 2016-2017, and with Dr. Jian Pei in the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University in 2015-2016. In 2014, he obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science under the supervision of Dr. Chin-Wan Chung from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The title of dissertation is: "Efficient and Scalable Query Processing Methods for Finding the Optimal Spatial Location," which was honored with the annual Outstanding PhD Thesis award from the CS department in KAIST. He received M.S. degree from KAIST in 2010, and B.S. degree from Inha University in 2008.

Research Interests

Dong-Wan's research interests cover the areas of data mining, databases, big data analytics, and computational geometry. Main theme of his research is to develop novel algorithmic tools for mining a massive volume of data that cannot be analysed by classic algorithms and conventional computing platforms. Currently, he is working on semantic trajectory mining and massive mobility data analysis. For the research, he always pursue his work to be theoretically rigorous as well as practically efficient.

All his works (see publications) can fall into one (or more) of the following topics:
  • Spatial/spatio-temporal data management/analytics
  • Trajectory data mining
  • Distributed computing algorithms
  • I/O efficient algorithms
  • Graph data analytics
  • Computational geometry
