Herbal regimens for gynecological diseases are mainly used for treatment of functional and subjective disorders. As a rule, the possibility of severe organ disease needs to be always excluded by a gynecologist before initiating any herbal treatment. If gynecological disease is mainly functional in nature, or, for example, harmless bleeding, herbal drugs can be useful adjuvant or, in some cases, alternatives to the standard therapy which, nowadays, usually consists of treatment with synthetic female sex hormones.
Some herbs in this category have achieved a particularly high standing in the past few years, since the result of basic research have now confirmed the long years of positive practical experience with these herbs. Some herbs are true alternatives to the synthetic hormone preparations used to treat major complex of climacteric complaints. The added benefit is their positive effect on the concomitant psychological symptoms.
Other herbs have demonstrated to directly inhibit prolactin secretion. This makes them the herbs of choice for treatment of premenstrual syndrome (painful menstruation, delayed or irregular menstruation, heavy menstruation) and mastodynia - breast tenderness.
Herbal drugs are also very useful in treatment of menopausal complaints. In certain medicinal plants, the chemical structure of some constituents resembles that of the human sex hormones. This seems to be theoretical basis for the practical efficacy of the plants.
