Herbs are an unequaled form of medicine for treatment of digestive system. They are indicated in a wide range of gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases. Their primary benefits are due to the direct effect on metabolism and absorption. Regarding the indication of herbs for gastrointestinal diseases, they are either the drug of choice or represent a true alternative to the synthetic drugs used in the same indications.
Gastrointestinal herbal remedies also fill therapeutic gaps, and/or provide better tolerated therapeutic alternatives. Herbal remedies are particularly useful when long term therapy is required.
Herbal medicine –naturally in conjunction with dietary and physical measures – is completely sufficient in many diseases affecting the gastrointestinal organs. In other cases gastrointestinal remedies are important adjunct to other therapies. The tradition of using medicinal teas for treating gastrointestinal disorders has been sustained for centuries. In cases of acute stomach complains herbal teas provide immediate relief. This is highly desirable; nevertheless the root of the problem has to be thoroughly investigated.
