Not only the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, and Medicaid are being threatened, but American Democracy is in more danger today than ever.
DOHCS gives every doctor in the Greater Cleveland area a chance to do something.
If we want to say to our children and grandchildren that we stood up, spoke up, showed up when the threat of Trump appeared, DOHCS is the place to be to have your doctor's voice heard.
Take a look at doctors taking a stand in the heart of Cleveland. Invited by Congresswoman Fudge, 30 doctors turned out. Drs. Lolita McDavid, Eric Schreiber, Mark Seidman, Arthur Lavin, and Margaret Stager spoke out on all the issues listed below.
Here are the key issues that DOHCS is working to have the impact that doctors' voices can make:
- Protecting American democracy- under serious threat from the denial of fact and unfair gerrymandering
- Protecting and strengthening the programs that give Americans access to care: Medicare, Medicaid, the ACA, and CHIP. We say, no American should die for lack of insurance, no American should go bankrupt for getting ill
- Women's health rights- Every society can be judged by the respect given to women to manage their health just like men do.
- Protecting our planet from catastrophic climate change- Denial of this can and will lead to more than poor health, but to mass devastation
- Decreasing the level of poisoning of our air and water- to save many lives, to save the developing mind of our children
- Preventing malnutrition- Cancelling programs like Meals on Wheels could kill many of us
- Sustaining affordable housing- Cuts to Section 8 could spike rates of homelessness, a clear hazard to health
- Demanding basic standards at the FDA- moves are being made to drop the requirement that drugs are safe and effective, a move that would end the credibility of our profession and put all Americans at risk
- Standing up for Science- when science is attacked, we are all attacked, for loss of potential advances and for the loss of understanding.
