We also have, in our big, family pack, many wonderful cats - some with us, some, gone to Heaven.
Teddy was our pack leader of late, The Head of The Gray Family - Number One, Head of the Whole Sunny Pack, Family Guy, and he went to Heaven 8 months after Sunny, the Dog leader of our pack did, but he, Teddy Bear, was 24 years young and was actually the real, true leader of our Family Pack, older by years than Sunny was.
Obviously, Teddy had a lot of health information and longevity tips for cats for us to share.
When I first met Teddy, who lived with my next-door neighbor, he was already either close to or in his teens, which is, as we all know, quite an advanced age for a cat.
I REALIZE NOW THAT MY TEDDY BEAR, MY PRECIOUS CAT-BOY, HAS- HAD- BEEN WITH ME FOR MUCH LONGER THAN ANYONE ELSE IN MY LIFE, THAT WE’D BEEN TOGETHER ON LIFE’S ADVENTURES AND TRAGEDIES, AND THAT HE’D ,AS I USED TO CALL HIM, BEEN MY ‘LITTLE FATHER’, AND MY "REAL" DADDY-BEAR FOR YEARS AND YEARS.
ONCE TEDDY AND I HAD LEFT HOME, MY BROTHER, WHO ALSO ADORED HIM, ALMOST AS MUCH AS I, WOULD STAY OVER, SLEEPING DOWNSTAIRS NEAR THE FIREPLACE. TEDDY WOULD CREEP DOWNSTAIRS AFTER HE'D LULLED ME TO SLEEP UPSTAIRS, AND SLOWSLY CLIMB ONTO MY BRO'S CHEST AS HE'D BEGIN TO RELAX INTO SLEEP, STAY THERE, BREATHING IN TANDEM UNTIL MY BROTHER WAS FAST ASLEEP, AND THEN TEDDY WOULD SLOWLY, LEG-BY=LEG, SNEAK UPSTARIS TO BE WITH HIS BABY, WITH ME AGAIN, AND WE’D CUDDLE AND SLEEP TOGETHER IN OUR LITTLE ‘HEIDI’ BEDROOM, MORNING GLORIES GROWING IN THE WINDOWS, MOONLIGHT SHINING IN THE OPEN VERANDA DOORWAY, WITH THE OTHER KITTYKATS, LISTENING TO THE WAVES TOSSING THEMSELVES TO SLEEP.
(Now, it's years later, and on January 2, 2013, Beau, Beauregard, the sweet child of Teddy and of Baby Thing, went peacefully to Heaven in my arms, gently, at almost 22, and it is He who had been with me the longest of anyone in my life. I am just now putting his page together in a beautiful homage to My LIttle Fella, My Beau. )
LIKE ALL OF US. MY SKIN FELT THE WARMING RAYS THROUGH THE GLASS, AND I FELT GLAD, TOO, FOR THE DAY, FOR ALL DAYS, FOR ALL MY MORNINGS. I DROVE BEYOND THE HIGH ROCKS, THE REVETMENTS WHICH PRETEND TO HOLD IN THE MASSIVE BREAST OF THE SEA FROM OUR TEMPORAL BEACH DWELLINGS. SEVERAL COUPLES OF SEAGULLS STOOD ,SOME ON ONE LEG, GROOMING, PREENING THEMSELVES IN THE SUNLIGHT, HAPPILY, LAZILY, SEPARATING EACH FEATHER, COMBING THEM WITH THEIR LONG, SLIGHTLY HOOKED, YELLOW BEAKS, AND MY TEARS BROKE OUT ANEW AT THE BEAUTY IN THIS, SO SIMPLE,SO GRACILE, ACT. AND I KNEW THAT, IF I COULD SOMEHOW SEE INTO OUR BEAUTIFUL BEACH HOME, I WOULD SEE THIS GROOMING, THIS SUN WORSHIPPING, GOING ON JUST THE SAME ON OUR WINDOWSILLS, LADEN WITH OUR CATS, (EXCEPT FOR TEDDY, THE ELDEST, WE CALL BEING EXTREMELY ‘YOUNGSTERISH’ IN AGE, WHO SEEMS NOT ABLE NOW TO REACH THE SILL, THOUGH HE CLIMBS NIMBLY UP CLOTHED AREAS, LIKE OUR,( HIS TOO! )COUCH, - AND THAT, ALL OVER THE WORLD, ALL THE TIME, AS THE SUN WARMS ALL, AS THE EARTH, SUNBATHER EXTREME, OFFERS ALL THE PARTS OF HERSELF ,ROLLING AND TURNING IN TIME, TO SOOTHE, WARM, REST HERSELF IN HIS BENEVOLENT RAYS,
Emporer Tedward, His Serene Highness, holding Court. I swear, Teddy was like a Buddha in His wise, spiritual Presence!
Teddy's Handsome Profile, Featuring his Cauliflower Ear, From His Youthful Fighting Days; His ear, lower on one side, made him all the more endearing, and gave him an adorable look!
I called Teddy the "Calrk Gable" of Catdom, but his enormously handsome looks, his regal air, his graciousness and sweet smile, plus his charisma and his broad, round, large head.
Completely unique, Teddy lived nearby in our woodsy, hilly area, and I'd often see him when he lived next door, and very often - against all Tom Cat rules - he'd be babysitting kittens! Yes, whenever there was a litter of kittens around, which was all-too-often then (now, they've all been neutered and spayed and given wonderufl homes due to the deication of one couple!), there would be Teddy, seated in the middle of a sea of meowing tiny voices and upstretched tails. They always adored Teddy!
He was the Daddy to them all, whether in DNA or not!
Ordinarily, of course, we must always make sure to keep ALL male cats FAR away from espcially newborn litters of ktitens, for their instinct is to kill them and to make sure to breed with the Mama Cat.
Anyway, Teddy stood alone in this aspect.
He was doting, adorable, and extremely gentle with all beings, despite his size, except for other male cats, that is, whom he would thrash to keep out of his area and away from the cats he protected!
One day, several years after he'd moved in with Junior ,Squeaker, and me, a tiny, high-voiced, vocal little gray kitten followed him and whenever he'd try to lead her back, she'd scream. Gentlemanly and concerned, Teddy would sigh, thinking about his comfortable home and his food bowl, and return dutifully to the kitten who stood her little full height in yearning and devotion to the huge, fatherly cat. For about two months, I had to feed and give them water outside, at least 20 feet from the house, and the little fairy woods feral kitten whom I now called Baby Thing, since I was then unaware of which sex she was, sweetly dominated his every move. I put blankets and bedding out for them, and thankfully, in Southern California, weather is seldom an issue, but Teddy's face showed a constant wish to come inside to the home he had lobbied so hard to become a part of, and to spend time with me, the human he'd adored and chosen for himself. One day, I started putting their food bowl closer and clsoer to the back door, and then, finally, the little meowing girl followed him, as always, very closely, crying for him to stop, and once inside, I quickly shut the door! Finally, Teddy was inside again, where he longed to be, the lounge king on his huge sofa, the bedmate on our huge bed! Luxury abounded in our Malibu pad, and after a time, a long time, although Baby Thing would always cling and cleave to Teddy's body, her terrified eyes began to soften, and the sweetest thing - we developed a relationship that through the years, through her nineteen years, and including her widowhood of eight years, she and I had a very close bond. I miss them both terribly, and yet must celebrate their many years of closeness, comfort, safety and Love in what few cats ever get to have these days - a true Cat Family of their own.
My Beautiul, Wild, Wayward Little Pixie Girl, Baby Thing, and Her Lifelong Protector, Her Teddy Bear - This Devoted Couple - the Greatest Example of True Love I Have Ever Seen In My LIfe
The Grays, or The Gray Family, gave us the best years of our lives in daily examples of unconditional Love. For 25 Loving Years, The Grays lived on. Until January 2, 2013, when their Son, Beau, went to Heaven. Now Teddy, Baby Thing, Bunny and Beau, as well as Tiny Girl, who had been claimed by a neighbor, lovingly, as a kitten, and Little Boy Blue, who had only survived for two days, are our revered ancestors who visit us in Spirit form and await us all in Heaven.
