Mystery Card Adapted from Andy Naughton by Doc Yoder
Effect: A volunteer chooses a two digit number between 1 and 52 . The volunteer does simple math to find a new number. The mathemagician deals cards onto the table while counting to that number.
Materials: A stacked deck of cards so that every ninth card is known by the mathemagician.
Method:
1 Ask the volunteer to choose a two digit number between 10 and 53. 2 Ask the volunteer to add the two digits together. For example: 48 → 4+8=12 3 Ask the volunteer to subtract the new number from the first number. Example: 48-12=36
4 Tell the volunteer to deal 36 cards onto the table.
5 Ask the volunteer to look at the last card that was dealt and to send that picture to your mind by thought waves. Name the card while pretending to read the volunteer's mind. Congratulate the spectator.
Performance notes:
Note that number of cards that are dealt will always be a multiple of nine. You will need to know the cards that are at the 9th, 18th, 27th, 35th, and 45th positions. It could be an ace of Clubs at the 9th spot, a two of Clubs at the 18th spot, a three of Clubs at the 27th spot, a four of Clubs at the 36th position, and a 5 of Clubs at the 45th position.
