CERT: Doing the Greatest Good for the Greatest Number

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) began promoting nationwide use of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) concepts in 1994. CERT training is designed to teach community members how to prepare, and take care of themselves, their family, and neighbors in the event of a catastrophic disaster. In 2004, operating under the umbrella of Citizen Corps, Daisy Mountain Fire & Medical (DMFM) began teaching CERT to residents of Anthem, Black Canyon City, Desert Hills and New River. Completion of this course does not commit you to anything, but sometimes people are looking for more, and want to become an affiliated volunteer with the Daisy Mountain Fire & Medical Citizen Corps. CERT training is available as:
IS-317 can be taken by anyone interested in CERT. This course is also recommended for those who have completed the G-317 but wish to periodically refresh their skills. It takes between six and eight hours to complete this online course.
G-317 is presented in a classroom environment and is only offered by a local government agency such as the emergency management agency, fire or police department. 20 hours of in class training.
This 20 hours of training is provided FREE of charge. This class is tailored to Arizona and more specifically, the DMFM communities (Anthem, Black Canyon City, Cave Creek, Desert Hills and New River). Training is open to anyone who is at least 18 years old (as young as 14 years old if a parent is also attending the class but some restrictions apply).
DMFM G-317 CERT training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people that they serve. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations, or workplaces in basic response skills. If a disastrous event overwhelms or delays the community's professional response, CERT trained individuals are then in a better position to provide immediate local help, until more help arrives.

CERT training will teach participants to:
1.Describe the types of hazards most likely to affect their homes and communities.
2. Describe the function of CERT and their roles in immediate response.
3. Take steps to prepare themselves for a disaster.
4. Identify and reduce potential fire hazards in their homes and workplaces.
5. Work as a team to apply basic fire suppression strategies, resources, and safety measures to extinguish a burning liquid.
6. Apply techniques for opening airways, controlling bleeding, and treating shock.
7. Conduct triage under simulated conditions.
8. Perform head-to-toe assessments.
9. Select and set up a treatment area.
10. Employ basic treatments for various wounds.
11. Identify planning and size-up requirements for potential search and rescue situations.
12. Describe the most common techniques for searching a structure.
13. Use safe techniques for debris removal and victim extrication.
14. Describe ways to protect rescuers during search and rescue.
