Foundations in Animation Language is a First Year animation subject in the University of Technology Sydney School of Communication. Students participate in a varied program of observational drawing classes, visual research, story-telling and problem-solving projects designed to introduce them to a wide range of possibilities within animation. In collaboration with other teachers I conduct classes in life drawing, as well as field drawing involving excursions to Taronga Zoo, the Australian Museum, Cockatoo Island and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney.
The set of about seventeen handouts contain all of the information needed for the workshop, but keen students may like to look at the books by Peck, Hale and Loomis at the top of the following list, either online or in class during breaks. Serious students will find it useful to eventually work their way through many more of the texts on the list, and elsewhere; each one will yield insights not found in the others.

The actual app is expensive and also at the time of writing has some complaints about ads on the paid version. But the images and short videos and their explanations on the Instagram channel are great.

It’s only when what can be taught, is working in perfect harmony with what cannot be taught, that a work of art results.
