Dr. Colvard received his M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, NC, did a year of surgery residency at NC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill and three years of psychiatry residency at Duke University Medical Center.  It was not until his son was learning to scuba dive that he decided to pursue further dive training and found that he had a knack for working with anxious dive students and traumatized certified divers who wanted to resume diving.

In 2000 Dr. Colvard began conducting paper and online surveys of thousands of divers around the world.  His first study on diver panic involved over 12,000 divers.  He had a private practice of psychiatry in Raleigh, NC for over 30 years and is now pursuing other activities, like helping new divers become more confident and skilled on Bonaire and elsewhere.   He has logged over 800 dives in oceans around the world.
