Melanie Banks Art Teacher IS 278:
"Students in grade 7 and 8 art talent classes collaborated on mystery grid portraits of Frida Kahlo and Nelson Mandela. I like to start the year with a group project. Students worked on creating enlarged copies of individual squares from a cut up photo. The squares were then assembled to create these portraits. Without an idea of who they are drawing, and only fragments to work with, students have to really focus on what they see. Their main focus was on creating different values and visual texture using pencil (grade 7) and oil pastel (grade 8).The students were excited to see who they were drawing. It was a great lesson in the power of collaboration."
