Hounslow council in west London is conducting urgent testing on the aluminium cladding of multiple high-rise tower blocks in the borough following the Grenfell Tower disaster.

.

With councils across Britain scrambling to reassure residents that their homes are safe or announcing reviews, Hounslow council has written to residents of Clements Court, a 13-storey block containing 78 flats, telling them the development is not considered a fire risk.

.

But planning documents identified the cladding as the same brand used on Grenfell Tower, and the same contractor was used to install it. In a further statement to the Guardian on Tuesday, the council said it did not know if the aluminium cladding material (ACM) on the building contained a mineral or polyethylene core. ACM with a polyethylene core, used to clad Grenfell Tower, is less fire-resistant.

The number of people dead or missing presumed dead following the Grenfell Tower tragedy has risen to 79, police have said, as a minute’s silence was held for victims of the fire.

.

Firefighters halted work to join residents at the north Kensington site at 11am on Monday during emotional scenes to remember those killed. Four more people were formally identified, taking the total to five in the early stages of a search and recover operation expected to take weeks.

.

Those named formally on Monday were Anthony Disson, 65, Abufars Ibrahim, 39, Ya-Haddy Sisi Saye, also known as Khadija Saye, 24, an artist who had previously been identified by friends, and a 52-year-old woman whose family did not wish for her name to be released.

.

Cundy said: “On Saturday I went in myself and went to the top floor and it is incredibly hard to describe the devastation in some parts of that building.

.

“I have investigated major crime for most of my service and I have seen some terrible things, but I don’t think anything prepared me for what I was going to see when I was in there.”

London Fire: Grenfell Victims 'Not Being Forced to Move Away'

BBC News

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-40343897

.

Victims of the Grenfell Tower fire are not being asked to move hundreds of miles from their homes, the team organising the emergency response says.

.

The Grenfell Response Team also said it was not aware any victims were sleeping in parks and denied claims some could be made "intentionally homeless".

.

Labour MPs have raised concerns some people are sleeping rough and others being offered housing in Lancashire.

.

It comes as a doctor said some victims will take "months" to recover.

.

Fourteen people are still in hospital after the fire, including eight receiving critical care and some in induced comas, NHS England has said.

.

Police have said the number of people dead, or missing presumed dead, currently stands at 79.

Grenfell Tower, explained: how a deadly fire in London became a political crisis

Grenfell Tower residents knew they were in danger. Nobody paid attention.

Then their building caught on fire.

Only seven months before a catastrophic fire engulfed an apartment building in West London, leaving at least 79 people missing and presumed dead and hundreds more homeless, residents in the public housing project said their warnings about safety and fire hazards would only be paid attention to if a huge disaster happened, resulting in a “serious loss of life.”

.

Their dire prediction came true.

.

On June 14, a fire broke out just after midnight in Grenfell Tower, a 24-story public housing project. As the fire rapidly spread through the building, residents were so desperate to get out that some jumped out of windows, while others screamed for help. It was Britain’s deadliest fire in decades.

.

As details about the residents’ warnings to the neighborhood association and building managers emerge, the biggest question is: Why were their complaints ignored? This tragedy could have been avoided because everyone, even government ministers, knew the residents were at risk.

.

Investigators are still looking into the causes of the catastrophic fire, but Grenfell Tower residents and Londoners are furious, demanding answers and change.

.

Grenfell Tower was built for low-income residents, but the neighborhood is gentrifying

.

.

It’s gentrification at its most basic: modernizing an area to attract wealthier residents while disregarding the poorer residents who lived there in the first place.

.

And that’s exactly what happened to Grenfell Tower.

.

It was supposed to be a beautification project, except for the flammable cladding

West London residents have expressed outrage at the influx of visitors taking selfies in front of Grenfell Tower and urged guests to refrain from partaking in “grief tourism”.

.

Numerous signs have been erected around the fire-ravaged 24-storey west London building urging visitors to “stop taking pictures please” and “stop taking selfies”.

.

Bystanders are said to be taking photos in front of the blackened skeleton without paying their respects to the 79 people who lost their lives in the inferno or engaging in relief efforts.

.

Wayne Kilo Lewis, who lived in the attached block to Grenfell for almost three decades, told The Independent anger among local residents was rising.

Would a White British Community Have Burned in Grenfell Tower?

By Dawn Foster

LONDON — If it hadn’t been Ramadan, even more people would have died, firefighters told me on the scene at Grenfell Tower, the apartment building in West London that went up in flames on June 14 and is believed to have left more than 80 people dead.

.

The building had a high number of Muslim residents, and when the fire began, in the early morning hours, many people were returning from prayers or were awake, breaking their fast, and were able to raise the alarm. None of the survivors I spoke to, or saw interviewed in the media, had heard a fire alarm: Instead they were woken by smoke, screams or their neighbors hammering on doors to wake them before escaping themselves.

The Grenfell Tower fire was the end result of a disdainful housing policy

The people who lived in Grenfell Tower should be writing this article. But those who died cannot tell their stories, and those who survived are still dealing with their trauma. The residents had tried for so many years but were silenced by a system that prevented them from being heard. The most persistent were threatened with legal action for defamation which had the effect of discrediting their claims of neglect and mismanagement. It’s only now that people are listening – when it’s too late.

.

I worked with a group of residents living in Grenfell Tower through my involvement with the Radical Housing Network, a network of housing campaigns across London. The first meeting of tenants in early 2015 was attended by around 100 residents. Each spoke of the historical neglect of the building, of the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO) failing to undertake basic but vital maintenance or improvements. Residents recounted incidents such as disturbing power surges in which appliances “blew up”.

.

I’d been asked to help the residents organise and campaign on the specific issue of a major refurbishment of the building being undertaken by a private contractor. The residents – mainly social tenants but also people renting from private landlords in flats previously purchased under right-to-buy – represented a typical slice of working-class urban London. They were ethnically diverse, and many had brought their children with them to the meeting. Their unequivocal message was one of a failure by KCTMO and the private contractor to respond to their concerns, let alone take any action about them.

Victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster have resorted to living in cars and parks, the local MP has claimed.

.

Emma Dent Coad, the newly-elected Labour MP for Kensington, described the "total chaos" in the borough at a Justice for Grenfell march on Monday night.

.

"People have been sleeping in cars and in parks because they don't know where to go and they aren't being looked after," she told Sky News.

.

"Secondly they need to be re-housed permanently and thirdly they need a long-term care package... people who'll always be there for them."

.

It has been confirmed that at least some victims of the blaze have been rehomed in hotels.

The government has been criticised in the wake of the deadly blaze which tore through the Kensington tower block last week with emerging reports revealing the 24-storey building wasn't equipped with the safety precautions required to prevent such an event despite a residents' association warning the council about fire safety issues.

.

The video was uploaded with the simple caption: “I am simply struck by how a 25-year old show can so closely resemble today's reality, with seemingly so few of the issues having been addressed in the interim.”

Theresa May has prioritised the rights of absentee landlords over the Grenfell victims

LAURIE MACFARLANE
20 June 2017
Open Democracy UK
http://tinyurl.com/yac3adkr

Objections to the requisitioning of empty properties have nothing to do with fears of state coercion. Instead, it's about protecting the interests of the rich at all costs.

Unsurprisingly, Theresa May has chosen to prioritise the rights of absentee landlords over the rights of the victims of the Grenfell tragedy. Why is this the case? It’s quite simple: the victims of the Grenfell tragedy are mainly poor, working class Londoners. The owners of the Kensington properties are the world’s rich and powerful. The balance of power in British society lies with the latter, and successive governments have set the rules around property rights accordingly. As Adam Smith, often regarded as the forefather of liberal economic thought, wrote 240 years ago:

“Civil government, so far as it is instituted for the security of property, is, in reality, instituted for the defense of the rich against the poor, or of those who have property against those who have none at all”.

Maybe – just maybe – it’s time to change that.
