Prof. (Dr.) S. Mohankumar started his career at TNAU in 1989. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1996 from TNAU, Coimbatore and got postdoctoral training in Molecular genetics under Rockefeller Foundation Rice biotechnology program in Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, USA during 1999-2001.
He served at TNAU in different positions for 30 years as Teacher for UG, PG students. Prof. Mohankumar is an accomplishing teacher in the field of molecular entomology and biotechnology. He mentored 3 PhD & 22 MSc students in molecular ecology and insect-plant interactions.
He has completed many externally-funded (DBT, DST, USAID, AICAR)) projects as Principal Investigator sponsored by National and International agencies. His accomplishments includes, host plant resistance, plant virus-vector interactions, characterization of thrips and whitefly populations and their role in virus transmission, identification of DNA markers for marker assisted breeding in rice and vegetable crops and development of BT brinjal resistant to shoot and fruit borer. He has also contributed to the field of insect taxonomy through DNA barcoding and molecular marker approaches and characterized host associated and geographically varied insect populations.
He coordinated multi-institutional research projects for molecular characteri-zation of phosphine resistance in storage pests which caused control failure in food grain storage. His team mapped the level of phosphine resistance and assessed the population structure of grain storage pests of India using molecular tools. Novel microsatellite markers were also developed for rice weevil using Next Generation Sequencing technique. Apart, he studied the molecular ecology of insect pests, pollinators and natural enemies and was involved in bringing out a monograph on “Morphometry and Phylogeography of honey bees and stingless bees in India”.
