Albéric du Chastel (1842-1919) / François de Callataÿ

Source:

Compte Rendu 57 (2010) p. 39-44

Abstract:

Having considerable financial means at his disposal since he was a teenager, Albéric du Chastel de la Howardries spent his all life in the pursuit of beauty, forming many collections (e.g. chinese vases, women and ancient coins). In 1899, the Belgian State bought in once his collection of 821 Greek and Roman coins (among which 331 in gold), expertized by Ernest Babelon who did not hesitate to place it, for what concerns the top pieces, before Saint-Petersburg, München and Berlin and possibly even before London and Wien. The paper deals with this excentric and mundane collector who was also a painter and a photographer (he travelled all around the world with a gigantic camera, called the Super, which he had hismeld created to take stereoscopic views).

Source:

Comptes-rendus des Séances de Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (avril-juin 2006) p. 737-741

Abstract:

The archives of Jeanne and Louis Robert have been donated to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in 1998. This note gives a survey of their numismatic contents: a rich correspondence (with Henri Seyrig among others), 2,658 casts of coins and above all 1,129 coins, mostly bronzes (1,085) coming from Asia Minor (mainly Caria) which will be published as a special monograph of the serie Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum. In most cases, provenances have been recorded which makes this material especially interesting for research.

Dossiers d'Archéologie 248 (novembre 1999) p. 4-13

Abstract:

An excentric character who had very soon substantial financial means at his disposal, Albéric du Chastel de la Howardries (1842-1919) built a unique collection of 821 coins (among which more than 300 Greek and 500 Roman), most of them rare and in mint state condition, coming from famous sales of his time (Dupré, Julien Gréau, Jarry Sandès, Tyskiewicz, Bartolomeo Borghesi, Demetrio, Ponton d'Amécourt, de Quelen, Ashburnam, Bunbury, Montagu, etc.) or reputed hoards (14 aurei come from the Boscoreale hoard). In 1899, he succeeded to sale his coin collection, expertised by Ernest Babelon, to the Belgian state for 300,000 Belgian francs

Source:

La Vie des Musées 20 (2006) p. 30-37

Abstract:

The lives, the antiquarian interests and the numismatic collections of Hubert Goltz (1526-1583) and Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) are discussed. Beyond the numismatist, Goltzius was an engraver, as well as a very innovative published and bookseller. We are not very well informed about the coin collection of Rubens, who favoured antiquities of a higher level (sculptures and gems).

Abstract:

The paper aims at illustrating the results of my latest researches on the life and  coin collection of Ludovico Stanzani. The recent discovery of a plaster bust  informs us, for example, about Stanzani’s affiliation to the Freemasonry and gives a face to his name. Some handwritten tickets accompanying his coins give  evidence of the numismatic literature used to identify the pieces – probably by Stanzani himself or by someone who had access to his collection. In the Appendix figures the catalogue of a group of 150 specimens, among which  Golden Horde issues and anonymous Mongol coins.

L’'ardimentoso progetto”'di Vito Capialbi, numismatico e antiquario / Giorgia Gargano

Source:

Numismatica e Antichità Classiche 38 (2009) p. 83-109

Abstract:

Abstract:

Jubilee doctor and coin collector Berndt Samuel Kallenberg (1826-1910) lived and worked in Kristianstad in north eastern Skåne, where he was teacher at Kristianstad Högre Allmänna läroverk. This article presents Kallenberg´s numismatic deeds by three authors. The first section is written by Ian Wiséhn and is a short biography of Kallenberg and a description of his donations. Subsequently Dan Carlberg makes an account of Kallenberg´s accomplishments as a coin collector. Finally Cecilia von Heijne presents coin finds acquired by Kallenberg.

Collectors at auctions, auctions for collectors / Hadrien Rambach

Schweizer Münzblätter 238 (Juin 2010) p. 35-43

Abstract:

A large number of people, including most collectors, have bought or sold at auction . In 2007 alone, over 80 million people used the electronic auction-house Ebay (founded by Pierre Omidyar in September 1995), spending almost $50 billion in total. Although the Internet has made auctions global and more democratic, they are no novelty and have been found in most cultures, from antiquity onwards. This short history of auctions, their techniques, their customers, and what they offer for sale, is designed to give numismatists a broader understanding of a familiar and important element of their collecting life.
