La date des premiers tétradrachmes de poids attique émis par Alexandre le Grand / François de Callataÿ

Source:

Revue Belge de Numismatique 128 (1982) p. 5-25

Abstract:

The topic of my Mémoire de licence at the UCL (Université catholique de Louvain), this research was started in October 1981 at a time I had no knowledge of the paper published by O.H. Zervos in NC 1982. Dealing with the same problem (when Alexander the Great began to issue his silver tetradrachms "Herakles/Zeus Aetophoros"), it turns out that we arrived at the same conclusion: not before autumn 332 BC, while in Tarsus after the battle of Issus. The reasons are several: iconographical (the first Macedonain issues show a Oriental throne, parallel legs, dotted sceptre and a stool which are non-Greek [even more so if taken together]), stylistic (it looks like if the same engraver was responsible of the last Persian issues at Tarsus for Mazaios [Tarkumuwa] and the first for Alexander) and metrological (it makes more sense to adopt a new standard for silver after the first victories in Asia than because the exploitation of the mines of the Mount Pangeus). In addition, the pattern of the hoards buried before 330 BC also argues for a lowering of the traditional date given to the first Alexanders in silver: 332 BC instead of 336 BC.

Greek coins from archaeological excavations : a conspectus of conspectuses and a call for chronological charts / François de Callataÿ

Source:

Agoranomia : studies in money and exchange presented to John H. Kroll / ed. by Peter G. van Alfen. - New York : American Numismatic Society, 2006. - P. 177-201

Abstract:

Starting from the monumental publication by J. Kroll of the Greek coins found in the Athenian agora, one tries to gather the major publications for Greek coins found in official excavations (e.g.: 5,862 coins for Priene, 3,817 for Olynthus and 2,176 for Susa). For the 38 sites or studies under consideration, a total of 36,107 coins have been published (7 in gold, 1 in electrum, 997 in silver and 35,102 in bronze). Few publications allow to follow the number of coins recovered (i.e.: dates of production) from one century to another (as it is nonetheless the case with Cyrene, Seleuceia on the Tigris, Delos and some sites from the Black sea as Chersonesus are exceptions). The general trend (with exceptions) seems to be an increasing of material through centuries, giving some support to the idea of a growing monetization. Finally, we argue for a "surface index" (as it could be done for the house of the Comedians in Delos or the house of Dionysos in Paphos (Cyprus): a simple ratio between the number of coins recovered and the extend of the excevated surface.

Les plombs à types monétaires (monnaies, jetons, poids, sceaux, épreuves et fantaisies) dans le monde grec / François de Callataÿ

Source:

Revue Numismatique 166 (2010) p. 219-255

Abstract:

The lead objects with Greek monetary types are more and more documented. This study aims to offer them a general frame of thinking, at a moment when several recent publications identify them, rather ex abrupto as test-pieces. As a matter of fact, these lead pieces with monetary types may have had various purposes: coins (official [and not necessarily only in a context of emergency], unofficial [ancient imitations and modern forgeries] or votive), tokens, seals or weights. The hypothesis of test-pieces is not absolutely discarded but, in most cases, it does not fit with practical facts (we give a catalogue of all these alleged test-pieces). In several cases, we prefer to see them as simple fantasies, which were not obtained anyway from the die itself.

Pourquoi le 'distatère en or au portrait d’Alexandre' est très probablement un faux moderne / François de Callataÿ

Source:

Revue Numismatique 170 (2013) p. 175-189

Abstract:

The recent publication of the proceedings of the conference held in 2007 concerning the unique gold 'distater' with the portrait of Alexander the Great (Holt, Bopearachchi 2011), including the eagerly awaited metal analyses, combined with the appearance of a critical review of that book (Bracey 2011), invites reconsideration of the problem by adding some new arguments, classified in decreasing order of their power of conviction. Out of the 17 presented arguments, two seem to us to create an impossibility while nine others make it unlikely that the piece could be genuine. In addition, reasons are given why the gold stater of Sophytes is surely a fake.

Les principales collections publiques de monnaies grecques / [François de Callataÿ]

Source:

Compte Rendu 41 (1994) p. 66-78

Abstract:

A panel of 13 Greek coinages thoroughly studied through a die-study has been taking into account to calculate the frequency of the different provenances. These 13 coinages are: Velia, Camarina (Kamarina), Gela, Messana (Messina), Hieronymos of Syracuse, Philip II of Macedonia, Amphipolis, the Phocians (Phokians), Chalcis, Philetairus (Philetairos), Miletus, Cnidus (Knidos) and Samos. The largest coin cabinets for Greek coins are for this sample : Berlin, London, Paris, New York, Cambridge, Oxford, Wien, etc. Dealing with rarer isues (also well known through a die-study: Evainetos for Syracuse, the Amphictionic coinage at Delphi, the Arkadian league, Pheneus and Lebedus [Lebedos]): the order is now: Berlin, Paris, London, New York, Boston, Cambridge, Brussels, LIsbon, etc.

Problèmes de terminologie en numismatique grecque : la classification des monnaies en périodes, séries, groupes, émissions, etc. / François de Callataÿ

Source:

Revue Belge de Numismatique 159 (2013) p. 1-32

Abstract:

A large number of die-studies are now available for Greek coinages. However, very few authors are explicit about the classifying terminology for these coinages. This paper considers 150 monographs in order to make an inventory of the terms used (‘group’, ‘issue’, ‘period’, ‘series’, but also ‘class’, ‘family’, ‘mint’, ‘officina’, ‘phase’, ‘section’, ‘style’, ‘symbiosis’, ‘type’, ‘variant’ or ‘variety’). For each of them, an effort has been made to define their meaning (s), their frequency of use, and their relative power, which is the proportion of occurrences for which they are in a dominant position. Special interest is devoted to the words ‘groups’ and ‘series’ which are often used in opposite ways.

White gold : an enigmatic start to Greek coinage / François de Callataÿ

Source:

American Numismatic Society Magazine 12 (2013) 2 p. 6-17

Abstract:

On 26 June 2012, the Israel Museum opened a spectacular exhibit of early electrum coinage entitled “White Gold,” and, in the days before, hosted an important academic conference reexamining the many economic, political and numismatic problems associated with these early coins. The papers of the academic conference are to be published this year under the auspices of Haim Gitler, Catherine Lorber, and Koray Konuk. What follows is the keynote address from the exhibit opening summarizing the results of the conference and where we now stand in our understanding of the earliest western coinages.

Bilingual coins of Severus Alexander in the Eastern provinces / Dario Calomino

Source:

American Journal of Numismatics 2nd ser. 26 (2014) p. 199-222, pl. 58-60

Abstract:

This article considers different categories of bilingual coins of Severus Alex- ander on the basis of their meaning and function. It focuses in particular on issues showing the deliberate use of bilingual legends, but only on a very lim- ited part of an otherwise entirely monolingual civic coinage. Two case studies are examined in detail. The first considers coins of Nicaea in Bithynia, which circulated on a large scale also outside Asia Minor, and especially in Moesia Superior, Dacia and Pannonia; the second presents some hitherto unknown bilingual issues from Nicopolis ad Istrum, in Moesia Inferior. The analysis of analogies and discrepancies between them offers the opportunity to discuss the function of these coins and to suggest a possible interpretation for the economic and cultural context in which they were produced.

Abstract:

The custom to furnish the dead with coins started around 500 BC at the Eastern boundaries of Greek culture, inCyprus and Lydia. It follows from both the archaeological context of the relevant graves and Near Eastern literaturethat a Mesopotamian custom was transferred to the West. The Greek mythology of ferryman Charon, whose assistance the dead has to pay, has a certain model in Near Eastern mythology. However, scholars hesitate to regard the mythologem as the reason for the custom of Charon's obol. The ferryman's fee is often called a secondary, witty invention that conceals the intrinsic meaning of the custom. Two explanations have been favoured: a) the paying-off of the dead that prevents his/her return, b) the equipment of the dead that enables him/her to maintain his/herstatus in the underworld. It will be argued that these two motives cannot be entirely separated from each other, particularly since the second comes to the fore by itself as soon as the dead belongs to a distinguished family. The article deals with those attested cases where the dead was furnished with gold coins.

White gold : revealing the world's earliest coins / Koray Konuk and Catharine Lorber ; ed. by Haim Gitler

Published:

Jerusalem : Israel Museum, 2012

Abstract:

This richly illustrated and luxurious volume is based on one of the Israel Museum's most popular exhibits, 2012's White Gold: Revealing the World's Earliest Coins (more than 100 coins are displayed in the catalogue including 25 enlargements on double spread sheets).  White Gold: Revealing the World's Earliest Coins is the first public display of an outstanding group of five hundred miniature masterpieces from two important collections of electrum coins. The exhibition provides an intimate glimpse into the dawn of coinage, shedding light on the story of one of the most important innovations in human history. Electrum coins are not only historically significant, but also astonishingly beautiful. Reflecting a rich diversity of subjects, they trace the evolution of Greek art from the seventh through the fourth century BC and draw us magnetically into a vibrant and fascinating iconographic world.

Abstract:

One of the most critical developments in the course of Mediterranean history was the invention of coinage. The quest for metals—the very commodities that define our periodization of ancient Greece (Copper Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age)—is not simply an issue of technological innovations, the vicissitudes of supply, or the mechanics of regional networks but a real search for structuring commodities of value that ultimately leads to an economic system of exchange not limited to elites. The culmination is the invention of coinage, which first occurs in western Anatolia and eastern Greece in the cultural milieu of the later seventh and sixth centuries B.C. It is an innovation with global consequences. In searching for the origins of coinage, the specifics of the particular cultural context are of paramount importance. By focusing on the early coinage of several Greek centers, more particularly on the emblems that certain city-states chose for their coinage, images that hark back to prehistoric measures of value -cattle, bronze tripods, grain- this paper challenges long-held assumptions as to the economic underpinnings of coinage. Struck by the state-the polis-these emblems sought to represent a collective identity. By boldly minting their identities on silver coinage, the Greek city-states chose money, the very vehicle of value, to create relations of dominance and to produce social orders that had not existed before.

Abstract:

A number of 'pseudomints' in central Italy struck small change with types copying a number of city mints, in the second and first centuries bc. The Pompeian Pseudomint used Massaliot types, among others; it is therefore important to establish if its coins are found in France, and, if so, in which contexts. To date there has been only one sure attribution. We now publish, from Provence, two new Pseudomint coins, one from an archaeological context in the oppidum of La Cloche, which was destroyed in 49 bc, as well as two coins of the central Italian Italo-Baetican series. These coins may be dated to the late second and early first century bc, when, apart from Rome, all civic mints had closed, and are valuable for documenting contacts between the central Italy and Provence at this late date.
