Abstract:

This paper assesses the importance of numismatic data for the study of political developments in Sogdiana from the late fourth through the early second century BC. It revises published data about earlier coin finds and presents previously unpublished proto-Seleucid and Seleucid coins. It draws conclusions concerning the contribution of this evidence to the chronology of the passage of Sogdiana into the influence zone of the Seleucid empire and the Graeco-Bactrian kigdom.

Abstract:

Cities have an allure for numismatists. he desire to associate the minting of coins with particular cities is remarkably strong, oten surmounting an absence of evidence. his paper explores the evidence for the minting locations of Kushan coins. It illustrates this evidence through a series of example cities which can be connected to a greater or lesser degree with particular issues of coins.

Abstract:

This article was written at a time when the date of Kanishka I and Azes I were still debated. In the light of more recent research the date of Kujula Kadphises should be later, c. AD 50-90.

The Soter Megas coins of the first and second Kushan kings, Kujula Kadphises and Wima Takto / Joe Cribb

Source:

Gandharan Studies 8 (2014) p. 79-122

Abstract:

The anonymous Soter Megas coins of the Kushan period have posed the problem of their attribution since they were first discovered in the early 19th century. This study, based on an examination of over a thousand examples, shows that their issue probably began in the final years of the first Kushan king Kujula Kadphises (c. AD 50-90) and continued through the reign of his son and successor Wima Takto (c. AD 90-110). All the former attributions are examined and analysed in the light of a new classification based on a re-examination of the coins. The coins issued without a king's name after those with the name of the first Kushan king Kujula Kadphises have for long presented a problem for Kushan studies, because, although it is widely agreed that they are Kushan issues, they mostly lack the name of the ruler issuing them. These anonymous coins, referred to in earlier numismatic literature as issues of the 'nameless king', are also known as 'Soter Megas' coins because of the Greek titles ΣΩТНΡ МЕΓАΣ (meaning the Great Saviour, or the Saviour, the Great) which appear on them. These epithets follow the imperial title ВАΣΙΛЕYΣ ВАΣΙΛЕYΩN (Basileus basileuōn), which literally translates as 'ruling king', but is probably meant to represent 'king of kings', as it is so translated on bilingual Greek-Prakrit (Kharoshthi) coins of this series (Konow 1929: lxix). This 'vast and mysterious coinage' (Rosenfield 1967: 18) has been found in large numbers over an area stretching from north of the Oxus River in current day Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, through Afghanistan and Pakistan and into northern India.

A Graeco-Sogdian mint of Euthydemus / Jeffrey D. Lerner

Revue Numismatique 151 (1996) p. 77-94

Abstract:

Our task is to ascertain whether there is sufficient evidence to include the ancient country of Sogdiana within the sphere of the Hellenistic world. This will involve an examination of a series of early Sogdian issues: silver coins with a bridled « horned » horse reverse type and their counterparts in bronze. I shall propose that these coins were minted under a certain Euthydemus (before с 221 - after 196/1 (?) ВСЕ) when he governed Sogdiana prior to his usurpation of the Bactrian throne. It will also be seen that this former Seleucid type was chosen to curry the favor of the Sogdians themselves, as it associated Euthydemus with Antiochus I for reasons of propaganda. Therefore, I shall attempt to prove that these coins support the argument that a Graeco- Sogdian kingdom existed and flourished under Euthydemus.

Methodologische Überlegungen zur Geschichte Baktriens : Könige und Münzen / Peter Franz Mittag

Source:

Schweizerische Numismatische Rundschau 85 (2006) p. 27-46

Abstract:

Owing to the lack of literary and epigraphic sources the reconstruction of the history of Bactria widely depends on a reconstruction of the chronological sequence of the Bactrian coinage. From the literary and epigraphic sources we get the names of up to eleven Bactrian kings. The coins provide a range of more than forty-five kings. Various reconstructions try to date and locate the places of production of all coins despite the fact that only little can be said with certainty. For that reason even recent reconstructions differ from each other and have to be adjusted from time to time. Therefore it seems necessary to distinguish between the conclusions that can be drawn from the available material with certainty and speculations that cannot be verified. After examining the non-numismatic evidence, the main task consists in evaluating all numismatic methods applied to the analyses of the Bactrian coinage. There are some methods which lead to quite unproblematic conclusions concerning dates (1. dated coins, 2. the so-called pedigree coins, 3. over-strikes, 4. die-links, 5. family links). Further examination is necessary with respect to four more methods (6. copies of coins, 7. coin hoards, 8. style, 9. different forms of letters). In most studies, all nine methods are combined without any discrimination as to their different applicability. The most important method for the object under discussion is the examination of over-strikes - and nearly every other month a new example turns up on the market. For that reason it is most important to make a clear cut between the quite reliable methods (1.-5.) and the other, more speculative methods, in order to avoid permanent re-reconstruction. The reconstruction of the areas that were ruled by the Bactrian kings depends on six methods (1. find spots, 2. weight system, 3. mint marks, 4. local reverses, 5. style, 6. different forms of letters). None of these methods can be applied without problems and conclusions have to be drawn with caution. On the basis of all this it is (only) possible to reconstruct the relative chronology of 33 kings without running the risk of having to work out a new reconstruction every year.

Abstract:

The article is concerned with Seleucid and Graeco-Bactrian coins found in the excavations at Kampÿrtepa, carried out by the Tokharistan archaeological expedition of the Fine Arts Research Institute during the years 1979-1991 and 1999-2010. In all, 30 coins of interest have been found there: 2 coins of the Seleucid king Antiochus iand 28 of the Graeco-Bactrian rulers, including coins of Diodotus, Euthydemus i, Demetrius i, Euthydemus ii, and Eucratides i. Most of the coin finds were small-denomination bronzes. Two more unique coins of an unknown type were uncovered at Kampÿrtepa: the legend on one of them contains the name Heliocles [ iii]. In addition, three rare imitations of Demetrius iand Eucratides coins are presented in this paper.
