Coins of the satraps and of the Great King / Jarosław Bodzek

Abstract:

The Royal Achaemenid coinage was as magnificent and powerful as the Achaemenid kings were themselves. The gold daric was, next to Athenian ‘owl’, the most significant type of coin in the ancient world before Alexander the Great, as confirmed in ancient written and epigraphic sources. Apparently blinded by the magnificent glow of royal gold coins, ancient writers like Aristotle (Oec.2.1345β) failed to notice that the picture of Achaemenid coinage is much more complex and includes also coins struck by satraps and other representatives of the Great King. It is not my intention to present here a detailed typological and metrological analysis of the royal or satrapal coins; this has been done elsewhere1. My purpose here is rather to define some important features of the royal coinage and compare these to the so-called satrapal coinage. A further aim is to expand on satrapal coinage, i.e. to define the phenomenon, to determine its distinctive features and to place it correctly in the pattern of coinage of the Achaemenid Empire. Particularly important is indicating the exact position of satrapal coins in reference to royal and local coinages.

On the dating of the bronze issues of Tissapherness / Jarosław Bodzek

Source:

Studies in Ancient Art and Civilization 16 (2012) p. 105-118

Abstract:

The author considers the problem of the dating of bronze coins issued in the name of the famous Persian grandee, Tissaphernes, satrap of Lydia and Caria and karanos between the years 413-407 and 400-395 BC. Three issues of such coins are known, which are different in iconography, form, legend and metrology. They are traditionally dated to c. 400-395 BC. However, in the author’s opinion, in the light of recent discoveries and assessment concerning the launching of bronze coin production in western Asia Minor, it is possible that the dating ought to be moved to the first period of Tissaphernes in the office of karanos, i.e. to c. 413-407 BC.

Abstract:

The coinages issued by the Persian satraps in Asia Minor are reviewed summarily. The satrapal coinages are particularly interesting as they show for the first time coin portraiture in a Greek context. The first precursors are coins struck by Themistocles at Magnesia and by an anonymous satrap at Phocaea. The first satrap to whom a certain number of coins, struck at different places and periods, can be attributed, is Tissaphernes. His coinages are followed by those of Pharaabazos, Spithridates, Orontes and Tiribazos, with their names inscribed in Greek. At the end of this survey, some small coins are discussed which were found at the Saqqara excavations and were probably struck by Alexander the Great at Memphis ; it has been suggested that the head in a Phrygian cap represents Alexander

Abstract:

This paper puts into perspective recent literature (126 bibliographic references published during the years 1985-1990) for Hellenistic coinages struck in Asia Minor. Besides generalities and main topics (such as the coinages of Alexander the Great, the cistophoric coinage and the wreathed coinages struck c. 150 BC) or the publication of important hoards (such as Meydancikkale), the paper deals specifically with main areas (Pontus, Paphlagonia, Bithynia, Mysia, Troad, Aeolis, Ionia, Caria, Phrygia, Lycia, Pisidia-PLycaonia-Pamphylia, Cilicia, Cappadocia, Armenia and Commagene).

Abstract:

The paper aims to gather and put into perspectives studies published during the years 1990-1995 for coinages produced in Hellenistic Asia Minor. Beyond general topics such as the coins of Alexander the Great, Lysimachus and the Attalids (including the cistophori), main areas have been systematically investigated (Pontus, Paphlagonia and Bithynia, Mysia, Troad and Aeolis, Ionia, Caria [Karia], Phrygia, Lycia, Pamphylia, Pisidia and Lycaonia, Cilicia, Cappadocia, Armenia and Sophene. The bibliogtraphy amounts 196 entries.

Trésors et circulation monétaire en Anatolie antique / textes rassemblés et éd. par Michel Amandry et Georges Le Rider. - Paris : Bibliothèque nationale de France, cop. 1994. – P. 19-35

Abstract:

This paper aims to prolong the books of Margaret Thompson on the Asia Minor mints of Alexander the Great (Sardis, Miletus, Lampsacus and Abydus). It insists on the predominance of gold if calculating in terms of absolute value and raises some points about the difficulty both to locate the mints and to establish the sequence of their issues (especially at Sardis and Abydus). The idea of an interruption between 317 and 310 BC is disputed on the basis of the many observed die-links. Discussing the weights of the silver drachms, we argue in favour of their great value to determine the sequence and even the approximate date of large ensembles but certainly not as precise as to attribute a year to each variety. At last, we discuss at length and in a quantified perspective the attractive hypothesis of M. Thompson who correlates the peak in the production for the years 325/4 BC with the payments of disbanded mercenaries on their way home. All in all, it seems well that the opening of several mints in Asia Minor ca. 325 BC with a specialization for silver drachms and a sustained rhythm until 317 BC fits rather well with this 'merceanry' hypothesis.

Abstract:

It is common knowledge that Athenian currency enjoyed in the 5th century a very wide range of circulation both within the territories subjected to Athens and beyond. However, owls are found in only very limited number in hoards and single finds discovered within the archêin Asia Minor, whereas they were hoarded in far greater number outside that area. This paper attempts to understand the mechanisms that might explain this paradox and proposes to reassess the role and place of Athenian currency in the cities and communities of Asia Minor subjected to Athens.

Abstract:

This paper focuses on the area of western Asia Minor from the beginning of silver coinage to the conquest of Alexander the Great. Using the one hundred known hoards from this area and period, it establishes a changing pattern of coin circulation which appears closely correlated to changing patterns of coin production. Whereas, during the late 6th and 5th centuries BC, hoards tend to contain coins of relatively few mints or, when several mints are present, these tend to be represented by fractional issues, during the 4th c. BC hoards tend to contain higher numbers of mints. This 4th-century phenomenon appears to be the result of a fundamental shift in coin production which saw the majority of mints in the region converting to the use of the Chian weight standard. The result was nothing less than a revolution in coin circulation, and marks a fundamental change in economic behaviour.

Abstract:

The final issue of traditional cistophori bears on its reverse a monogram that may be resolved ATRA and the letter Q, together with a torch or a thyrsus in the right field. These symbols have always been taken to point to two mints, Ephesus torch) and Pergamum thyrsus). Die links, taken together with the irregular die axes that are never observed elsewhere in the series, point to a single discrete mint. The group is probably to be placed immediately prior to the cistophoric issues of M. Antonius in 39 bc.

Observations on the numismatic evidence relating to the great satrapal revolt of 362/1 B.C. / Robert A. Moysey

Abstract:

This paper presents a synthesis of recent scholarship concerning the numismatic evidence for the history of the general satrapal revolt of 362/1 B. C. Coinage associated with five Persian satraps (Datames of Cilicia, Orontes of Mysia, Ariobarzanes of Hellespontine Phrygia, Autophradates of Lydia and Mausolos of Caria), Tachos of Egypt, Strato of Sidon, and the Lycian dynasts Mithrapata, Artumpara and Perikles are studied for possible relevance to the satrapal revolt. In addition, evidence for the relationship between the satraps and Greek civic mints such as Sinope and Lampsakos, the alleged satrapal coin portraits, the possible association of the engravers who cut the dies used to mint these coins with the engravers of seals which bear similar motifs, and the possible relevance of the « Yehud » coins minted in Judaea are considered. The conclusions reached may be summarized as follows : of the satrapal coins only two series of Datâmes are likely to have been minted specifically to pay troops during the course ofthat satrap's rebellion. Coins of Tachos and Strato minted during the period of the revolt can also be identified and provide useful chronological information. Some Lycian issues as well as some « Ychud » coins may have been minted during this period, but those assertions cannot be proved.

Abstract:

Under the emperor Decius the Lydian town of Philadelphia used the foundation of its identity-establishing main cult by Orestes, Iphigenia and Pylades as the theme for one of its coins, which propagated its homonoia with Ephesos. The first article looks into the background to this homonoia connection based on the family relationship of the Philadelphian cult founders with the founder of the Ephesian sanctuary, Agamemnon. Dealing with Apollo Hikesios, who appears on coins from several Ephesian issues, the second article shows that the epiklesis aims to represent Apollo as the first suppliant seeking protection at the Ephesian asylum sanctuary and thus as the founder of the Ephesian asylum. The third article is concerned with a Lycian silver coin from Araxa dating from the early 4th century BC and sporting the bust of a godly queen with a diadem. Evidence is adduced which suggests a) that this is the picture of the Lycian Mother of Gods and not of Leto, whose cult was only being introduced at about that time by the Xanthian dynast Arbinas, and b) that the belief of Leto’s delivery in Araxa, attested by evidence from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, arose only in the High Hellenistic period during the heyday of Homeric philology at Alexandria and the Ptolemaic rule over Lycia.

Beiträge zur kleinasiatischen Münzkunde und Geschichte. 10: [Kadwenische Münzbilder] / Johannes Nollé

Gephyra 7 (2010) p. 71-126

Abstract:

A new type of a coin minted by the city of Kadoi, near the source of the river Hermos (Gedizçay), prompts some reflections not only on the history of this little known city, but also on the settlements of the Mysians in western Asia Minor. The available evidence leads the author to the conclusion that Mysian people settled in large numbers in the so-called area of 'Nordostlydien' and the areas further south, so that the whole region between the Temnos mountains in the north, Thyateira in the west, Temenuthyrai in the east, and the north-eastern fringes of the Tmolos mountains in the south could be regarded as part of Mysia. This does not exclude the possibility that both Lydian and Phrygian culture were very influential there, too. these 'Abbaeitean' Mysians, like their countrymen further north, became increasingly important when they were recruited as cavalrymen by some Hellenistic kings, especially the Attalids. # e new coin from Kadoi depicts two mounted heroes; these are not the Dioscuri, as some numismatists have thought, but the Mysian heroes Ennomos and Chromios, who are mentioned in Homer’s Iliad. By minting this reverse with the image of two Mysian kings, the citizens of Kadoi embedded their city in Mysian origins and traditions, just as an inscription found in Kadoi and honouring the 'propator Chromios' has long been known to have done. Linking Kadoi with Homer and the Trojan war evoked a glorious past for the city and alluded to its alliance with Troy, the ancestor of Rome. So Kadoi could claim to be one of Rome’s most ancient allies.

Abstract:

This article presents a small collection of additions to the corpus of coins minted in the province of Asia under Gordian III (238-244). Among them is an unpublished medallion celebrating the homonoia between Ephesus and Alexandria in Egypt and representing an elaborate composition of different deities from both cities. Another coin of Ephesus shows a winged goddess whose exact identification remains uncertain.

Abstract:

This paper examines the weights of 165 early electrum coins. I show that the weight standards used by some mints differed slightly from those used by others ; that  mints did not issue smaller denominations that were proportionally lighter than larger denominations ; and that larger denominations were more variable in weight than smaller denominations. This last phenomenon is explained by the use of larger denominations within the economy.
