Abstract:

Here the results of a research are shown on the symbolic function of the attestations of the dolphin, appeared as coin type since the VI sec. B.C., conducted according to the method proposed by the L.I.N. founders, also using a critical analysis of the literary sources. If it is true that the cases in which the animal can have approached to the sea, to Apollon or to Poseidon don’t miss, nevertheless it maintains a proper firm and specific symbolic autonomy in comparison to such divinities, that, if, makes it useful to attribute own particular qualities as symbol of company, of protection and salvation to the divinities with which it associates.

Abstract:

This article presents three coins of Himera, Sicily, recently acquired by the Harvard Art Museum: a hitherto unpublished Chalkidian obol cf. Kraay, Himera no. 291) allows some clarifications on the weight standards of the fractional coinages of archaic Sicily. The known drachm of Akragantine type suggests some further thoughts on the types, and the recut classical tetradrachm provides an interesting example for die manufacture.

Ein sizilischer Münzfund aus der Zeit des Agathokles / Christof Boehringer

Schweizerische Numismatische Rundschau 88 (2009) p. 59-67, pl. 4-5

Abstract:

The article publishes a lot of 26 coins from a hoard found on Sicily before the mid 1980s. Its content suggests some different datings and interpretations of the mint output of Syracuse around 300 bc. Since minting in the name of the Syracusans did not stop even during the later years of Agathocles reign 317 289 bc) we must conclude that he respected all the time at least formally his oath towards the constitution of the polis. Some minor changes in dating Syracusan full- weight pegasi with triskeles symbol) and Siculo- Punic coin series allow us to draw a rather more precise picture of the historical background and the conditions of their production. The lot also confirms that the latest tetradrachms of Rhegion were issued at the end of the fourth century bc, not around the middle of that century.

Abstract:

The article deals with the question of how the political history of Katane in Sicily in the last decade of the fifth century is reflected in the coinage. A discussion of the literary sources is followed by an examination of the coins that differ from previous issues by a change of types litrae), by new denominations hemidrachms, drachms) or by modification of types tetradrachms). The dating of the overstrikes of drachms of Katane by the Campani at Entella to the years after 404 is justified, and finally the end of the independence of Katane is set a few years later than the date that can be deduced from Diodorus.

Coins and religion representations of Demeter and of Kore/Persephone on Sicilian Greek coins / Maria Beatriz Borba Florenzano

Source:

Revue Belge de Numismatique 151 (2005) p. 1-28

Abstract:

Our intention in this article is to try to understand why Demeter and Kore/Persephone, whose cults are so widely registered in Greek Sicily through literary and archaeological data, are on the other hand, so little represenled on the varions coins from the different Siceliot towns. We intend to enrich the possibilities of the interpretation of coin types, demonstrating that the combination « existence of a cult / coin type » is not a rule that can be mechanically employed in the study of Greek monetary iconography. Moreover it is our purpose to show that the image of these deities on coins was used especially during Agathocles’ rule and the period of Roman rule as a means of expressing a common identity among the several Siceliot towns. First of all, we shall analyse the literary and the archaeological evidence concerning the cult of these two Godesses in ancient Sicily and in the last part of the text we present a review of their images on Sicelot coinage.

Abstract:

The Aitna tetradrachm with the head of Silenus and Zeus seated on a throne is the master work of one of the finest die-engravers of the ancient world. The iconography of Silenus, or of the Sileni viewed as a group, documents acomplex stratified reality, diachronically and diatopically diversified, within which the coin of Aitna holds a posi-tion of absolute prestige and authority.Hieron of Syracuse had founded - in around 476/475 BC – the city of Aitna, apponting his son Dinomenes as its basileus when still a child. The choice of the Silenus in Aitna was inspired by Chromius, the epitropos of Aitna andprobable coregent of the child king Dinomenes. Towards Dinomenes Chromius would have performed the samerole played by the old Silenus for the young Dionysus, adviser and tutor and perhaps also an ‘initiatory' functionif we give a symbolic value to the attribute of the scarab represented beside the Silenus' head. The tetradrachm of the Silenus would reflect the particular historical moment linked to the crisis of the pow-erful Dinomenedes dynasty in 467/66 BC, and the extreme attempt of the lords of Aitna to save a highlyunsteady power.

Abstract:

The unique tetradrachm of Aitna which is part of the Belgian national coin cabinet since 1899 has loften been acclaimed as the most remarkable surviving ancient coin. It is part of the Lucien de HIrsch collection (1856-1887). The paper sums up its historical fate (quoting Barclay Head, Alfred von Sallet, George Francis Hill, Charles Seltman, etc.) before giving a description of a coin which has been described as "a perfect lesson of history". The historical context (Hiero II of Syracuse renaming the city of Catania into Aitna) and the date (c. 465 BC) are dealt with. Its unknown engraver (called by the Moderns the "Aitna master") is hold as also responsible for the spectacular tetradrachms of Naxos. Two remarkable facts distinguish these types from all the others produced around the same type: a) the long beard which goes further than the dotted border and b) the wavy truncation of the neck.

Abstract:

This article deals with tetradrachms of Leontinoi overstruck on earlier Sicilian coins. The first one, which appeared on the coin market a few years ago, is overstruck on a Selinuntian tetradrachm (Schwabacher no. 7). The second one, in the Vienna Museum, is likely overstruck on a tetradrachm of Catane (bull/Nike series, flying Nike). It will further be argued that a third tetradrachm of Leontinoi in the collection of the American Numismatic Society is also overstruck on a Sicilian coin.

Abstract:

Imitations of distinctive coin types are an important part of the chronological evidence. This article deals with some copies of the masterworks of Euainetus and Cimon and discusses the arguments of distinguishing original and imitation. It will further be argued that the quadriga of one of the famous Cimonian tetradrachms is an artistic variant of an Euainetan composition. One may conclude that the tetradrachm of Euainetus for Catana (pl. 5, 11) was struck ca. 410 BC wheras the two tetradrachms of Cimon (pis. 5, 9 and 7, 17) are somewhat later, but surely before 405.

Summary:

This article deals with two issues of Motya didrachms which were omitted from Jenkins' Coins of Punic Sicily Part I, one because it was wrongly condemned and another which was classified under Segesta in the Naples cabinet; and with an issue of Panormos that was included in Jenkins' work, but now, 35 years later, turns out to be false. It further publishes a reverse die of Segesta of ca. 412 bc which was reengraved for use for Panormos.

La monetazione e il sito di Halykiai (Alicie) città della Sicilia occidentale / Lorenzo Lazzarini

Schweizerische Numismatische Rundschau 84 (2005) p. 15-24, pl. 3

Abstract:

This paper attributes for the first time a silver litra and a few bronze coins to the western Sicilian town of Alicie, and localizes its hitherto unknown site at the top of Mount Polizzo, close to the present village of Vita, on the base of coin finds. The coinage of Halykiai started around 415 bc with the emission of tetrantes, apparently the unique bronze fraction struck by the town, and continued with a litra and related tétras to be dated immediately before the destruction of Motya by Dionysios of Syracuse in 397 bc. After the quick re-conquest of Western Sicily by the Carthaginians, Alicie struck more abundant tetrantes to be dated around 390-370 bc. The coin types are connected with the peculiarity of the site, covered by a thick forest and the place of origin of the river Màzaro, the most important of the region: a nymph offering to a dog, Heracles, a boar, a man-headed bull and a dog. The latter is also connected with the ctonian cult of the dog attested at Segesta, Eryx and other poleis of western and eastern Sicily.

I primi oboli di Selinunte arcaica / Lorenzo Lazzarini

Source:

Schweizerische Numismatische Rundschau 83 (2004) p. 17-24, pl. 4

Abstract:

The recent finding in southwestern Sicily of two small hoards composed of archaic oboloi showing, on the obverse, the protome of a bull and on the reverse an incuse square allows to confirm the attribution of these small hitherto unattributed pieces to Selinus, as formerly proposed by G. Manganaro. They can be separated into four series based on the typology of the bull's head and the number of rays dividing the incuse square. Various historical and numismatic considerations show that these fractions are contemporary with the archaic staters with selinon leaf/incuse square that immediately follow the very first issue, and that they precede the well known and more common oboloi with leaf/leaf which belong to group II established by C. Arnold-Biucchi. These new fractions with the bull's head are tentatively dated to the years 530/25-510 BC.

The pro-Carthaginian and pro-Roman Hispanorum coin issues of Sicily (214-210 BC)

 / Fernando López Sánchez

Potestas 7 (2014) p. 51-75

Abstract:

The Sicilian coin issues with the legend hispanorvm were not only coined after the fall of Syracuse late in the year 212 BC, and neither were they of exclusively Roman pedigree. Half of the hispanorvm issues display a typology and manufacture that must be linked with the fifth Syracusan (and pro-Carthaginian) democracy of Epicydes and Hippocrates (214-212). Hispanorvm coins were minted at Leontini, Syracuse, Messana and Agrigentum by non-Hispanic engravers, and never in large quantities. They were made for delivery to a hispanorvm military unit of 300, or, more plausibly, 600 Hispanic and Numidian troops who became the personal guard of Epicydes and Hippocrates. In the years 211 and 210. Marcellus and Laevinus used this Hispanic unit for their own purposes in almost all of the Sicilian locations which had previously served Carthage, while the hispani who settled in Morgantina, on the other hand, probably did not do so until the pacification of Sicily in 210.

Iconografia e leggenda : il linguaggio monetale di Cartagine / Lorenza-Ilia Manfredi

Source:

Mediterranea 7 (2009) p. 203-216

Abstract:

This paper is about how the cultural, political and economic monetary language adopted by Carthage was influenced and arose from the necessity for the Phoenicians to adapt to the Greek and Roman worlds maintaining at the same time typical oriental characteristics. The first Punic coins in the West, which date back to around the 5th century B.C., were minted to facilitate integration into the Greek political and cultural reality in Sicily at that time, where each town produced its coins in almost complete autonomy and where each emission reflected the economic level reached by each single centre. This explains why the Phoenicians chose to use an iconography more or less of Greek inspiration and whose legends, though written in the Phoenician language, expressed a Sicilian semantic and political context. It was only in 410 B.C., due to the necessity to pay the mercenary troops engaged in war on the island, that Carthage began minting the first Silver coins that allude to the Carthaginian Military Administration present on the island. Nonetheless, the iconography remained predominantly similar to the Greek model though not exclusively. For instance, the Siculo-Punic tetradrachm, 320-306 B.C., which bore a female head wearing a oriental tiara and a lion standing in front of a palm tree, is a traditional Oriental Persian theme where the tiara and lion are symbolic of the ruling power of the Satrapes. The fact that coinage was introduced in North Africa and in Carthage itself at a much later date, highlights, on the one hand, the willingness of the Phoenicians to adapt to the economic system prevalent in North Africa where a monetary system was inexistent, and, on the other hand, the fact that in the Phoenician Administrative context money, as a means of exchange, was rare as was the case not only in the Achaemenid Empire but throughout the entire Middle East. The iconography adopted by the various Neopunic centres, from the end of the 3rd century B.C. to the 1st century A.D was of traditional oriental inspiration.

Further a unique silver fraction of the [S] Ichaninoi of the early 4th century BC is presented; its reverse type was so far only known from Greek vase painting and depicts a sanctuary of the river-god Sichas.

Abstract:

First, the Avola's hoard, IGCH 2122 — of which 4 darics and a pair of gold — « ercolini » are in the Syracuse museum — is to be dated from about 396 Β C, like also the other Avola's hoard, IGCH 2124, save the gold coins of Lampsakos, which must belong to a third Avola's hoard, IGCH 2169, made up of Corinthian coins. The daric is even in Sicily valued as « pure gold », melted to make valuable objects. It is also published a gold phiale of a Sicilian collection, with a Greek inscription, similar to a gold libation bowl of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A thorough review of the 14 gold coinages of Akragas, Syracuse, Gela and Kamarina, dating from 408-405 BC is also given : it is suggested that mese were minted to be paid to the mercenaries and having no gold-silver relation. A gold-silver relation (1 :12), in accordance to the Macedonian standard, is found in Syracuse in Timoleon's and Agathocles' time. Moreover, it is examined the chronology and the use of the Carthaginian gold coinage, Group III and IX, Jenkins : the latter is to be related to the payment of the Carthaginians mercenaries in 241 BC, who soon revolted (241-238 BC). Finally, it is discussed the Libyans' coinage, to be dated from about 215 BC.

'Metoikismos' dei Danklaioi a Mylai / Giacomo Manganaro

Abstract:

Some thoughts on early Segestan bronze coinage / John Morcom

Schweizerische Numismatische Rundschau 88 (2009) p. 41-46

Abstract:

This article considers the earliest bronze coinage of Segesta and reviews the arrangement proposed by Denyse Bérend at the VI Convegno del Centro Internazionale de Studi Numismatici Le Origini della Monetazione di Bronzo in Siciliae in Magna Graecia held in Napoli in 1977 and subsequently publishes in the Atti of that Convegno, and considers the chronology in the light of Silvia Hurter’s study of the silver didrachms and other coinage of Segesta Die Didrachmenprägung von Segesta, mit einem Anhang der Hybriden, Teilstücke und Tetradrachmen sowie mit einem Überblick über die Bronzeprägung, SSN 1 Zurich, 2008). It concludes that the chronological order of Bérend’s Groups A and B should be reversed, so that Group B, initially struck on a weight standard twice that found in Group A, but with many specimens being subsequently revalued by countermarking, should be placed first in the series.

Abstract:

The major islands of the Channel of Sicily – Melita, Gaulos and Cossura – went through similar historical events, falling in the hands of Rome from those of Carthage in the late III century B.C. Their coinage following Roman annexation also features certain similar characteristics. This work examines the overarching traits of the coinages of these islands, highlighting similarities and differences. It also offers a catalogue and a study of the coins of Melita (74 pieces) and Gaulos (9 pieces) featured in the Heritage Malta’s Numismatic Collection, kept at Valletta’s National Archaeological Museum. This work also surveys the development of the Maltese numismatic collection, illustrates the context of finding of the various pieces of local production, and discusses their weight, production and iconography. Finally, it offers an analysis of the countermarked coins and the case of a holed coin.

Revue Numismatique 155 (2000) p. 71-78

Abstract:

Segesta, hybrid issues and the question of a central mint / N. Keith Rutter

Source:

Schweizerische Numismatische Rundschau 88 (2009) p. 25-33, pl. 1-3

Abstract:

This contribution starts from Silvias recently published study of the didrachms of Segesta and in particular from her conclusion, shared with Kenneth Jenkins, that in the last decade of the fifth century bc a central mint operated in western Sicily. The paper challenges the conclusion of Silvia and Kenneth that the mint was situated at Panormus; rather, it was at Segesta itself. First, the evidence for central minting is summarized and the arguments for Panormus outlined. Then the claim for Segesta starts with a discussion of the interpretation of the crucial Reihen 9, 10 and 11 of the didrachms, and continues with an assessment of the historical circumstances of the time, in particular the central role of Segesta in the Carthaginian invasion of western Sicily in 410/ 409. Western Sicily was not the only area in the Tyrrhenian to experience central minting at this time. The phenomenon also occurred in Campania, and the paper concludes with an examination of stylistic and other connections between coins of western Sicily and Campania at the turn of the fifth and fourth centuries. It is suggested that the background to these connections is the employment of mercenary soldiers.

Rappresentazioni simboliche della Sicilia sulle monete greche e romane / Marco Vitale

Hormos n.s. 7 (2015) p. 200-225

Abstract:

The question of the history of the ‘Sicilian’ triskeles, the so-called trinacria, is quite a puzzling one: Who invented this symbol? Female personifications, explicitly labelled as ‘Sicily’ (ΣΙΚΕΛΙΑ), are first attested in the federal coinage of Sicilian cities under the rule of Timoleon during the 4th cent. B.C. During the same period, a triskeles with a central female head and three legs, whose prototype had already been depicted on a bowl from Agrigento (c. 600 B.C.), appears on coins, too. However, the creation of the trinacria with the central gorgoneion with snakes’ head, its three winged feet and added ears of barley is attributable to the Roman Republican coinage. Moreover, this type of triskeles not only appears as a symbol of its own, but also – as iconographic novelty - in combination with the personification of the province of Sicily on Hadrianic issues.
