Abstract:

The discovery of an important inscription in Olympia in 1960 has revealed the Serdaioi. They have then been associated with a rare coinage which had until then uncertain identification. From this time, they have been attributed to Southern Italy, but others still persist to relate them to Sardinia. This study will re-examine the numismatic documentation and will add five new coins to the ten already known. One of them is a drachm, a value which was previously unknow for this coinage. It will be used to support the attribution to Southern Italy. All the coins will be analysed, in particular the hemiobol with the legend SERD whose attribution to the Serdaioi will be disputed.

Abstract:

A new coin from Sybaris provides new elements that allow to precise the context of the important innovation which is bronze coinage. Its attribution to the period Sybaris IV consents to link this new idea with Dionysios Chalkous and then to strengthen the link with the tradition. It also allows to precise the chronology and to confirm that the innovation came from Magna Grecia.

Abstract:

The author reexamines the San Martino in Pensilis hoard, and assesses its significance for the transitional period of Italian coinage in the 3rd century BC. The hoard allows us to document, for the first time, the changes that were taking place in the middle of the century, and enables us to date the coinages of Cales, Teanum and Suessa to the end of the First Punic war. It also contains the first and second issues of Roman didrachms and suggests that there was a gap in Roman coin production between 300 and 260 BC.

Abstract:

Winged or wingless, but in any case identifiable by the inscription NIKA Nike proves to be the most frequently represented subject on Bruttian coinage. In Magna Graecian and Sicilian areas the iconography concerning Nike – either winged or wingless – coincides with the iconography of the Personifications of the Cities, or Eponymous Nymphs. In the double function of Bride of the Governor and Mother of the citizens, they show iconographic and ideological characteristics derived from the figures of the Great Oriental Mother Goddesses and, in particular, from the Phoenician-Cypriot Aphrodite. The diachronic and diatopic analysis of Nike’s iconographies and related symbols demonstrates how the Bruttian Nike found her most direct pattern in the Nike/Terina. The evident continuity in cultural traditions indicates Terina as the city of the mint that issued all – or the greatest part – of Bruttian coinage. The localization of the Bruttian hoards proves, in fact, that the most important findings are placed in the middle-western area of Calabria today, particularly in the area which gravitates towards the Gulf of Lamezia.

Un gruzzolo di monete d'argento da Pontecagnano : l'offerta votiva di un mercenario? / Renata Cantilena

Incidenza dell’Antico 6 (2008) p. 183-203

Abstract:

During recent archaeological field surveys carried out in Pontecagnano, a little hoard of Greek silver coins, datable between the end of the 5th and the beginning of the following century (19 items among staters and fractions from Poseidonia, Velia, Turi, Eraclea, Caulonia, Crotone, Terina), has been excavated. The composition of the treasure and its placement, a sacred area designed for votive rituals, provide grounds for reflection on the monetary customs of the inhabitants of this Etruscan-Sannitic centre of Southern Campania. So far, for the same chronological phase, such customs have only been documented by the finding of coins offered to the deceased in a small number of grave goods. Therefore, the cause-effect relation between mercenary practices of local communities and the arrival of foreign currency in the Gulf of Salerno cannot be excluded. They were probably members of groups known as Tyrrhenoi and Sileraioi believed, in some literature, to be mercenaries employed by Dionisius I of Syracuse originating from both Ager Picentius and from the region crossed by the river Sele. The hoard was probably the offering of a mercenary soldier coming home. The value of coins is estimated to correspond approximately to the monthly salary of a misthophoros of that time. The place of retrieval would confirm this hypothesis: the Northern sanctuary, in its present state appearing to be the only sacred part of the built-up area, was designated to both donations consisting of aes rude or coins and to votive offerings of a military type.

Unità ponderali e monetarie nei golfi di Napoli e di Salerno prima della II battaglia di Cuma / Renata Cantilena

Archeologia Classica n.s. 61 (2010) p. 399-416

Abstract:

Behind the monetary practices of the Late-Archaic period offering evidence of the currencies of the Graeco-Tyrrhenian world, we can glimpse the practice had been adopted as from the Bronze Age to determine the ratios between the various shekels and the minor fractions present in the Near East and the Aegean. A propulsive role is hypothesised for the Euboeans in transferring Levantine ponderal practices to the Gulf of Naples, in the early days of frequentation of the southern Tyrrhenian Coast In fact, the drachma of 5.8 g minted subsequently by the colonies of Chalkidiki in the West was not cut to a weight foreign to the Greek world but revived, in terms of coin, practices that developed in Euboea and the cities of Greece in contact with Euboea. Significantly, at Cuma were to be found coin representing the principal measures of weight (5.8 g; 7.76 g; 8.72 g) use as from the Bronze Age in Cyprus and on the Syrian-Palestinian coast as well as being attested in Euboea in the mid-9th century BC (T. 79 Toumba weights). The “Phoenician” foot of 7.76 g seems to have found its way to the Tyrrhenian not through the Strait, but along the coast of Africa, crossing south of Sicily to reach the Iberian coast and the Gulf of Lyon. The coinage of Elea and Poseidonia launched in the years following up on the settlement of the Phoceans driven out of Alalia were based solely on this ponderal value (and fractions of it) and – although we have no precise chronological definition of the start of minting of the two poleis to argue that one preceded the other – we cannot rule out the possibility that its establishment on the Gulf of Salerno and the launch of monetary practices were due precisely to the Phoceans of Alalia, who were well acquainted with the ‘Phoenician’ foot in use on the Gulf of Lyon and along the coasts of north Tyrrhenian Etruria.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This article’s goal is to reconstruct the find of a coin hoard discovered in winter 1878-79 in Crotone, along the river originally located in the middle of the suburban area of the ancient city. The discrepancies of the documentation and the exact circumstances have been investigated following the available sources, in order to create a faithful reconstruction of the discovery. This hoard was considered an exceptional discovery, especially in a part of the city that in the last decade have given analogous evidences, although till now overlooked because of the difficulties to identify some old toponyms, even if in the XIX and XX century it was the scene of other important findings.

Abstract:

Monetary production in Etruria was sporadic and not as widespread as it was in the Greek and Roman world. A comparison of the use of coinage in Etruria and Magna Grecia shows that there was a delay in the adoption of coinage, although this view should be reconsidered, as in the case of the Eastern Phoenician and Punic world. In contrast to the strong presence in all of Etruria of different types of fragmented ingots, considered within the generic group of aes rude, the findings of silver bars, plates or strips are more exceptional. Before the introduction of minted money, these fragmented ingots of varying shape that are known to have existed since the Late Bronze Age may have had value as weights and as prestige items, destined for trade operations, the same as other metallic objects such as small hatchets and fibulae. Aes rude have been found in tombs and above all in proto-Etruscan deposits and are frequently found in funerary and sanctuary contexts and in Etruscan cities in which centres of production and redistribution would have existed. The latest excavations in the coastal town of La Castellina, to the south of Civitavecchia, halfway between Tarquinia and Caere, have confirmed the presence of a metallurgy workshop from the 7th century, with bronze casting. We propose to relate these metallurgy activities with the presence on the site and in the area surrounding the town of fragmented bronze objects that have been dated between the first Iron Age and the Archaic Period. The hypothesis is put forth that a centre for the production and possible storage of aes rude and other bronze ingots has been identified.

Les imitations pseudo-Ebusus/Massalia en Italie centrale / Suzanne Frey-Kupper, Clive Stannard

Source:

Revue Numismatique 166 (2010) p. 109-147

Abstract:

The coins that we describe as ‘pseudo-Ebusan/Massaliot’ use a number of types that imitate the coinages of Ebusus and Massalia, combined with Roman Republican and other types. They were struck in Campania, almost certainly at Pompeii. The pseudo-Ebusan/Massaliot complex was identified in the last ten years, on the basis of coins from excavations at Pompeii below the destruction level of AD 79. We identify the Ebusan and Massaliot prototypes, and for the first time the Roman prototypes, and possibly those of other Italian mints. The number of imitative types known, and the combinations of these types, continues to grow. Their production seems to begin inthe first decade of the first century BC, and reaches its apogee in the late 90s and early 80s BC. A technical characteristic of this coinage is that dies might be – and often were – used in either the upper or lower position, so that the concepts of obverse and reverse do not apply. We therefore propose and apply a methodology for describing and analysing such a coinage. We lastly consider whether these imitative Massaliot types reached Gaul in antiquity. Their absence in the many finds from southern France assembled by M. Py is confirmed by their extreme rarity in French collections. With a single exception from Glanum, the few examples known probably reached France with travellers returning from the Grand Tour. Further research may show whether the rarity in France of Pompeian imitations of Massalia is the result of limited commercial exchanges between southern Gaul and Pompeii, or whether some other explanation is needed.

Abstract:

A bronze coin traditionally ascribed to the small Greek city of Methana Argolis) came to light in the recent excavation in Castellaces Torre Cillea Calabria, Italy). The geographical circumstances of the find and the comparison of the new coin with the other three known specimens of this issue suggest a new attribution. This coin with the monogram ME was very likely struck in a settlement founded by a group of mercenaries that were discharged from military service by the Syracusan tyrant Dionysios I in the first half of the fourth century BC; the mint is probably located in ancient Bruttium or Sicily.

This article presents a die study of the coinage of the mint of Medma (South Italy) arranged in six groups which cover the period from 330 to 317 BC in a corpus of c. 89 specimens. The die analysis makes a contribution to the understanding of the poorly documented history of this ancient town and the connection with the similar coinage at Locri.

Abstract:

It is studied the evidence in the Aquileia territory of silver and bronze Greek coins from Sicilian mints, which includes examples of V- II century B.C. coming mainly from Agrigentum and Syracuse, but there are special witnesses of minor mints. It can therefore be concluded that these findings testify the passage of people (soldiers, sailors, pilgrims, merchants, workers), not of course from Sicily, who have left a mark of their passage in the sites of the region (sanctuaries? villages?, necropolis?). This testimony also reveals an interesting historical meaning as a significant documentation to establish some kind of contact and relationship which remains to be investigated , in order to better reconstruct in North-East shores, what has been called 'Adriatic Hellenismus'.

Offptint from: Communicating identity in Italic Iron Age communities / ed. by Margarita Gleba and Helle Horsnæs. - Oxford : Oxbow, cop. 2011. - P. 195-207

Abstract:

The paper will discuss a number of seemingly small coinages of Southern Italy. The coinages are closely related to the earliest issues of the major Greek poleis in technique, weight and motif, but the legends refer to other sites or peoples, and they have been ascribed to indigenous communities. What is the meaning of these issues? Were they intended to be used as money on a par with the Greek coinages in a greater economic system involving both Greek and indigenous sites? Or were they inspired by the Greek coinages, but intended as markers of identity? As an archaeological source these coinages are – unfortunately – badly recorded, and the coinages have in some cases survived in a couple of examples only. Is this due to chance, or an indication that they were indeed struck in very small numbers? How far can we take numismatic interpretations based on a relatively small material? These are some of the questions that will be explored in my paper.

The article discusses two silver fractions and a bronze coin of Metapontum, all so far unpublished, as well as a new variety of a stater. Special emphasis is given to their possible date and their respective position within the series published by Noe Johnston. The study is concluded by the assignment to Thurium of a small bronze coin hitherto attributed to Metapontum on the sole basis of the presence of an ear of barley on its obverse.

Minting identity : coinage, ideology and the economics of colonization in Akhaian Magna Graecia / John K. Papadopoulos

Source:

Cambridge Archaeological Journal 12 (2002) 1 p. 21-55

Abstract:

This article focuses on the early coinage of the Akhaian cities of South Italy - Sybaris, Kroton, Metapontion, Kaulonia, Poseidonia - against the backdrop of colonization. Minting an early and distinctive series of coins, these centres were issuing coinage well before their ‘mother-cities’, a phenomenon that has never been fully appreciated. With its origins in a colonial context, the Akhaian coinage of Magna Graecia not only differs from that of the early coin-minting states of the Greek mainland, it offers a case study that challenges long-held assumptions and potentially contributes to a better understanding of the origins of coinage. It does so by suggesting that coinage is much more than a symbol of authority and represents considerably more than just an abstract notion of sovereignty or hegemony. The images or emblems that the Akhaians of South Italy chose for their coins are those current in the contemporary cultural landscape of the historic Akhaians, but at the same time actively recall the world of the heroic Akhaians of the Bronze Age by referring to prehistoric measures of value. More than his, the vicissitudes of colonial and indigenous history in parts of South Italy in the Archaic period were not merely reflected in coinage, the coins themselves were central to the processes of transformation. By boldly minting - constructing - their identity on coinage, the Akhaians of South Italy chose money in order to create relations of dominance and to produce social orders that had not existed before.

Abstract:

Silver plated coins are frequently found in the indigenous settlements and sanctuaries from both the Greek and the Roman republic periods. The census of known coins and the context of their finding seem to demonstrate that these counterfeits were regularly used alongside the legal coins. Indeed, it cannot be excluded that the forgeries deliberately produced and circulated the counterfeits coins among those sections of the population who were less experienced with the use of money.

An incuse stater from the series ‘Sirinos/Pyxoes’ / K.A. Sheedy ... [et al.]

Journal of the Numismatic Association of Australia 26 (2015) p. 36-53

Abstract:

The South Italian silver incuse stater Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies inv. 07GS729 with the  matching obverse/reverse type of the bull with head reverted and the inscriptions ‘Sirinos/Pyxoes’ was minted sometime between c.540 and 510 BC. We know very little about the mint in which it was struck. Here we present results from SEM studies and from the current joint project of the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies (ACANS) and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO) which explore the techniques for making incuse coinage.

Abstract:

The numismatic context of the Messapia is enriched by a new document, important to rebuild the political, social and economic aspects of messapian society between late VIth and the first half of the Vth century BC. The archaic coin hoard from Muro Leccese is the result of a casual discovery by some municipality workers, during the restoration of the areas subject to the archaeological restrictions. The coins were found inside a earthenware jar, broken at the time of discovery, of which some fragments were recovered. The hoard, which was not published, only in 2014 has 're-emerged' thanks to the documentation in the archives of these city of Salento. It consists of 10 incuse coins minted by Magna Greek poleis.

A Central Italian coin with Dionysus/panther types, and contacts between Central Italy and Spain, in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC / Clive Stannard, Alejandro G. Sinner

Source:

Saguntum 46 (2014) p. 159-180

Abstract:

Three ‘Dionysus/panther’ coins are known from Catalonia, one from excavations at Cabrera de Mar. This is a key component of the Central Italian Assemblage of the Italo-Baetican series, and dates to the late 90s/early 80s BC. The excavation coin probably arrived during the Sertorian Wars (80–72 BC), certainly before 50 BC. We therefore review evidence of contacts between Hispania Citerior and Central Italy, Hispania Citerior and Ulterior, and Hispania Ulterior and Central Italy. We compare coins from the Cabrera de Mar Valley with Spanish coins from Minturnae. We reconsider the Isla Pedrosa wreck, which contained specimens of the Central Italian Assemblage, imported Italic ceramics from the Catalan coast and La Loba mine, and some of the more important wrecks between c. 200 and 50 BC. There is little evidence for maritime contact between Citerior and Ulterior, but better evidence, in each case, of contacts with central Italy. The relationship between the Central Italian and Baetican Assemblages of the Italo-Baetican series remains unclear.

Central Italian coins with Dionysus/panther types from Hispania Ulterior / Clive Stannard, Alejandro G. Sinner

Source:

Saguntum 48 (2016) p. 205-206

Abstract:

In Saguntum 46, 2014, pp. 159–180, we published three “Dionysus / panther” coins of the Central Italian Assemblage of the Italo-Baetican series from Catalonia, one of which, from excavations at Cabrera del Mar, must have arrived before 50 BC. This led us to explore numismatic and other indices of contacts between central Italy, Hispania Citerior and Ulterior. We now present four further “panthers” from Andalucía, three of which were brought to our attention by Gonzalo Cores Uría, and a fourth from Seville, which appear to be evidence of direct contacts between Ulterior

‘Pseudomints’ and small change in Italy and Sicily in the late Republic / Clive Stannard and Suzanne Frey-Kupper

Source:

American Numismatic Journal 2nd ser. 20 (2008) p. 351-404, pl. 83-85

Abstract:

Two 'pseudomints' of the first century BC are described: Pseudo-Ebusus/Massalia (almost certainly at Pompeii) and Pseudo-Panormos/Paestum (probably at Minturnae). The circulation of their coins, and of a plethora of foreign coins, suggests that a relatively monetarized economy in Latium and Campania was pressing all available coin into service, in a context of a penury of small change. Appendix 1 considers the circulation and overstriking in central Italy of Koan bronze coin. Appendix 2 compiles finds of foreign coin from Rome, Minturnae and Pompeii.
